Now you see, I think that walking on someone else's (often a complete stranger) carpets in your outdoor shoes is the 'height of rudeness'

let people be comfortable - some will take their shoes off & others wont. In some cultures it's the norm to take of shoes when going into a house - and in others not.

When we bought our first house the owners asked us to take off our shoes before we came in.

We've always been puzzled about this. The house was filthy and the carpets weren't pale (maybe they were originally).

They even took their carpets with them when they moved....even, yes, even the stair carpet!

Nowt as queer as folk...

Went to visit a house on Saturday and rather than being asked by agent to remove shoes, we were asked to put those swimming pool blue things over our shoes before walking on beautiful cream carpets.

The house was immaculate so I can see why

but laminate - No, it cleans easily enough

pale carpets i understnad - but laminate - i can't get over it.

Definitely not. We have beige carpet in the hall with a door mat then a runner carpet thing I bought the other day. The estate agent always takes her shoes off if they are wet and one couple asked if they should on Saturday. I said no it was fine to leave them on but they felt they needed to and did anyway.

Absolutely not - it would put be off buying the house TBH. Houses are to be lived in.

bookwormmum · 02/07/2007 10:19

I've been asked to take my shoes off by agents in new-builds (plus the estate was only half-constructed so there were lots of mud and puddles outside). The agent had holes in his socks as well which struck me as odd since he must be in and out of the houses quite often!!

Tbh I'd be more worried about sweaty socks trampling around my house than shoes being worn. We don't take our shoes off in my house at the door so I wouldn't ask anyone else to - I'd get a big mat for them to scrape their shoes on first.

musicianswidowAKAmumofmonsters · 02/07/2007 10:30

i would feel a bit strange if i went to view a house and got asked to take off my shoes. even more so with laminate. It would affect how i viewed the house and i would remember that above all esle about the house

i don't wear shoes in teh house usually btw

pinkspottywellies · 02/07/2007 10:36

One of my viewers had stiletto boots on and we went round the downstairs, then the garden, then I followed her upstairs as bits of mud dropped off her shoes all over my cream carpet! But I still wouldn't ask people to take them off!

Twinklemegan · 02/07/2007 10:51

Do people think it's chavvy to ask people to take their shoes off?

lulumamasmentee · 02/07/2007 10:58

we always ask friends/people we know etc to take their shoes off, but I don't think I would ask potential buyers to

when we went to Austria to visit family they always asked us to take our shoes off and by the front door had about 10 pairs of slippers all inside a really big slipper, which they give to guests to put on (most people in Austria have one of these I was told) they were really comfy!

SoupDragon · 02/07/2007 11:00

On laminate?? No! However, looked at a house with cream carpets at the weekend and the agent had a box of those blue slipover things you see in gyms and swimming pools

bookwormmum · 02/07/2007 11:01

My OH likes me to take my shoes off before I go into his flat (we have a long-running battle between my not-so-latent untidiness and his neat-freak instincts). I don't know if he'd ask viewers to do this though when he gets around to selling it .

SoupDragon · 02/07/2007 11:01

Hahaha! I see Kaloo has already meantioned the plastic bags

othersideofthefence · 08/07/2007 16:17

We were asked to remove our shoes when viewing a house recently. Unfortunatley the house owner had very recently shampooed the (horrid) carpets so we ended up with sodden feet.
