Walking straight into a kitchen/diner

Has anyone got a layout like this? Never liked the idea of the front door opening straight into a kitchen diner but our new bungalow has a ridiculously large entrance hallway with weird triangle chimney (think once upon a time it the the original living room) and just a stud wall separating the small kitchen.
In an ideal world with endless cash I have a brilliant floorplan but that's rearranging whole layout, knocking down walls, moving doors etc BUT we don't have the endless cash annoyingly 😆 so the cheapest way to have a nice big kitchen would be to turn both rooms into a kitchen diner but will it be really odd walking into it straight from outside? Thoughts appreciated.

Gingercat I wouldn't really want my bedroom coming straight off the kitchen, my husband works shifts so he'd be clunking around at weird times and also there's a big workshop outside where the backdoor is blocking the lovely view

Poker face you're right, no reason we can't move the lounge door now. To be honest by the time we can afford to turn the 2 bedrooms in to a master suite we'd need a new kitchen anyway so we might as well just do that now...the kids said they want to hide the door to their corridor inside a full length kitchen cupboard!....must admit that sounds really fun lol like a kitchen narnia.....don't know what guests would make of having to go through a cabinet to.go to the loo though 😆
This is the hallway now...Lovely crazy paving fireplace don't you think haha

Cinnamon, there's no door...just a weird arch hole and it's much smaller than a normal opening also there's a radiator on that stud wall, I think we will just take the whole thing out now and design the kitchen as per the long term plan except moving the bedroom corridor door.
Talking to my husband and we're thinking we can scale back the fire place without removing it by about a foot and maybe hide it and the corridor opening behind full length kitchen cabinet doors? Then put up a stud between that and the front door so we still have a hallway for coats etc

There are arches everywhere and only a few actual doors! Haha it was renovated last in the 80s so they were all the rage, along with crazy paving drive, patio and fireplace. Luckily the lounge fireplace isn't 😆 Still adore this place though, it's our forever home.

We knocked down a wall between our kitchen and dining room and come straight into that room from outside. We have a bootroom within that kitchen diner just next to the door. It works really well, but I do like the boots and coats being in a separate room i.e there is a wall around it but with no door.

The only thing I found hard to decide on when we did it was the flooring.

It felt like a lot bigger space and the flooring needed to be the same throughout. To cope with muddy boots and the kitchen area it had to be practical but I also really wanted wood flooring. We ended up with wood effect vinyl planks which I am still not wholly keen on.

Thanks Goodcat.....flooring is always hard isnt it, can honestly say I've never been happy with previous floor choices I've made 😤

Ah that kitchen is a perfectly decent size! And wow that garden is amazing. If your conservatory is warm all year round I think I’d take out the window between it and the kitchen.

Spicylolly · 18/01/2019 10:44

Great minds joinourclub, window went straight away 👍 I agree the kitchen could be fine sizewise with a new layout (no room currently for fridge or dishwasher) especially as we use the conservatory as a dining room but that massive hallway is just such a waste of space.

The garden here is amazing! That's why we bought this place, it has that top landscaped bit, then a paddock with a 100yr old ancient Apple tree that's HUGE. Then there's a gate into our woodland, I spend most my time down there with the dogs ....bliss ☺

I would do it but take the fireplace out and block off a small vestibule. Then put a door through to the bedrooms.

Ah it's huge, it'll be great!

What about a big built in cupboard by the door, between fireplace and front door wall. Coat hooks and shoes inside, so you can roll the door shut easily and shut all the hall clutter away from your kitchen. So like a utility cupboard, but for hallway stuff instead of washer/dryer. Maybe the stud wall's better though as you've plenty of room.
