Broken window mechanism

Our uPVC bedroom window no longer opens. It's not the handle that's at fault, it's the gearbox. The trouble is, we can't get the window open to replace the gearbox. We've been told the whole double window (i.e. including the half that isn't supposed to open) will need to be replaced.

The difficulty with that solution is the cost: £1,200. The reason for the high price is that there's a large conservatory directly below the window, preventing access without the use of scaffolding (and I'm not even sure they could erect scaffolding easily/at all because of other obstructions).

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how we can fix it, please?

(unless you have already done this)

Ask around for recommendations of a local independent tradesman who specialises in repairing plastic windows and patio doors. There will be one (at least) because they are fairly unreliable. The work is as difficult as being a washing-machine repairman.

There is no reason to suppose that your window is the only one in the world with a unique mechanism. The window companies buy them by the thousand from component factories.

It's possible that your quote is from a company that would rather make a £1200 sale than a £50 one. Quite understandable why they might feel that way.

Out of interest, here are some common examples that are bought and sold every day.

BTW advertising recommendation websites are not a good source.

Thank you for answering! We've had two different people come to look at it, following recommendations on the local community Facebook site. One said it was the gearbox and he'd get a price for us, then disappeared ignoring further communication.

The second one also said it was the gearbox but said, since we can't get at it, the whole window would need replacing. He quoted around £600 and sent his mate/colleague/associate round to measure up. Colleague said his associate was mad for thinking it could be done without scaffolding (I agree) and said he'd talk to glazier friend about the solution. Then disappeared. It was at that point I contacted a local company for a price, and they quoted £1200.

We were wondering if perhaps we could cut into the frame above the handle and put the rod back in position, allowing us to open the window and replace the gearbox if still necessary. Obviously it would look awful but at this point I'm not too fussed about that.

I would have thought there'd be a way to cut or lever it open. Ask local people you know personally for a recommendation.

For some reason, parish magazine adverts are good for local tradesmen.

That's a good tip, thank you!
