Kitchen Design - urgent!

Hi, we are currently at the start of a house extension (kitchen / dining / living room) and the builders are asking questions about where the sink / hob etc are going...

We do have plans and I thought I was set, but now I'm having a wobble and need some help please!

I have attached the kitchen plans and DIY kitchen design (which is the same as the Ikea and Magnet design)

I am now wondering if we should take the units round a bit so a sink could go by a window?

Please take a look and let me know your thoughts / ideas. Thank you

The door moving I think makes a lot of sense, it gives you much more choice.

Here's the peninsula idea - Fridge is nearest the window, freezer I'd put in the utility tbh.

Agree with moving the kitchen internal door. Here are two options, which I’ve just quickly done (2mins on my dinner).
I think by moving the freezer you will gain more Worktop space.
With option 2, the job could go in the island to free up more wall cupboard space, or behind the island to make extraction easier.

I like those too Pokerface. I think all of the options where the door moves make a huge difference. Once you take that out (and the freezer as we've both done) then it becomes much easier to see ways that can work.

If the table is going to be as large/as close to the opening as it's shown on the earlier plans then I would be trying to keep the island/peninsula a little further down the room (closer to where it is in my last one) just so you don't feel like there's a mass of chairs in the middle. If the table's smaller (for some reason every plan I've seen seems to have HUUUGE tables on them!) then shifting the peninsula up and cornering the hob works well.

Those designs are excellent - thank you! DH is on board with seeing if we can change the door position.

Stressing a bit over whether it will be awkward going in through the living room area / dining room or won't make any difference 🤷‍♀️

Personally it wouldn’t phase me having the door opening into the snug. Providing I could still fit the sofa etc in there. The swing of the door would have the door opening up into the dining area.

I think the benefit of this is, you get a better kitchen layout. Which is bigger, more work top space, better work triangle, better circulation space. And achieve your end goal of a larger kitchen with a breakfast bars and a large bi-folding door with views out on to the garden.

The downside is, you have a door which opens into the snug, so loose a small area from this. But this is a “snug” and you will have a more formal lounge elsewhere. Your walk through with the shopping from the door is slightly increased.

If your worried about how much you found encroach into the living area, if you following the WC / shower room wall. Then you could reduce the depth of the units in that area, and have a slight step in the wall.

I.E 600mm deep units backing onto the WC and 400-500mm deep units against the new wall, with a flush face. That way you can move the door over slightly.

My only concern with that, is that if that a new opening (kitchen / dining) you would be reducing the pier size that the steel is sitting on. And may have to check with your architect / structural Enginner that this will suffice.

It looks so generous with that door removed.

Thing is, how often are you going to be going straight between kitchen bit and rest of house? If you didn't have the snug you might be back and forth loads, but with the snug there, that's the natural lounging space you'll be to-ing and fro-ing from if you're cooking or even just making tea. The shopping route would be a bit annoying but it's not ridiculous.

Why do you want seats at an island when you have a table next to it.

Islands can end up being a roundabout.

What about getting rid of the island and have occasional chairs to make it a family room.

What do you think?

I like it! I think you get so much more useable space when the door has moved.
There seems a lot more work surface too.

Thank you very much. We are really pleased with it and definitely decided on moving the door - great advice!
