Help me plan my kitchen please?

We are having an extension where the room at the back will be 4.5m x 9.8m. We want it to include kitchen, dining and sofa tv. I just can’t decide between a small island or peninsula. I’ve attached some drawings. I need to ensure there is space for the table and sofas so don’t want the kitchen to encroach too much into the room. If I have an island it would only be 1.2 x 1.2. But would be contained to the right of the door. If I have a peninsula it could be 2.5m long but width wise it would eat more into the living space...... I just can’t decide what to do.... any opinions on islands v peninsulas would be gratefully received.

Personally I prefer the peninsula as it looks like there would be more space to get between the different areas - the spaces either side of the island look quite narrow. I think you need to think about how people would move around the space and having plenty of space to do this.

If go for the island. We have one around that size and I love it.

I think the peninsula is a better use of space. Why is there a gap between the run of units where the hob is and the tall units, fridge, etc on the wall at right angles?

SushiMonster · 12/01/2019 09:36

I think the gap is the ‘door to utility’?

I prefer the peninsular - more work too space and keep the kitchen delimknated and more space for people to sit up there and chat to you

Ah yes Sushi I think you're right.

Thanks for your comments. I think a peninsula is a more logical solution, and one we had/liked in our old house. I guess one thing appealing about an island was that I could have it in a different colour to the rest of the kitchen. I can’t quite work out how to combine two colours with a mixture of tall units and normal base and wall units.
Do you think I’ll have room for a table and then a sofa facing a tv on the left hand wall in the 6m left? I’m not sure the minimum distance I can get away with for the sofa from the tv.

I think the two colour units thing is a fad and in a couple of years it will be dated. I'd look at lovely flooring and painting the wall a colour you really like instead.

I think the tv distance depends on the height. If it has to be higher than eye level it's uncomfortable to sit too close and have to tilt your head back - can you put it at a lowish level on the wall? Or maybe put it on a bracket that lets you change the height depending on whether you're sitting at the sofa or the table?
