Paying for work that doesn't fix the problem

What is the acceptable way to deal with a situation where you are expected to pay for labour and parts but the problem isn't fixed? An item in our house needed upgrading, had a company round, agreed a quote and they came to do the work. Turns out the wiring in the original system is not compatible with the new system they want to install and so now said item doesn't work at all whereas it did before. Company want more money than the original quote to put it back to how it was because of the labour required to try and sort out the wiring. Is this reasonable? Isn't it up to them to work out compatibility with the part they replaced it for?

We've had similar in the past where the boiler didn't work, engineer came, ordered part to fix it, turns out it wasn't the problem, orders another part which doesn't work either so we end up paying for parts and labour that don't fix the problem and then have fork out for a new boiler.

In neither case have I been made aware that there is a risk it might not solve the problem and the contractors used are registered ones not cowboy types.

I get that they have had to pay out and spend time but at the same time, it's their mistake not mine. I'm getting a bit sick of paying through the nose whilst things are not getting fixed.

How do other people handle this?
