Please can anyone offer advice. Has anyone divided a one bed flat into a two and what sort of planning permission is required?

I don't think you'd need permission to put up a stud wall, but both rooms would need to have a window and so you may need consent of you need to add another window.
You'd probably also need consent from the freeholder, if it isn't a freehold property.

Ok thanks. Looking at my options as I need a two bed but choice limited on budget and might be worth splitting a one bed into two.
The ones in my area with two windows in one room and budget would mean splitting the lounge and then using the bedroom as a lounge.

We are in the process of splitting a two bed flat into three, so the process must be similar. I needed planning permission to install an extra window, which took about 8 weeks. We are losing space from the living room and will end up with one double room, two singles. It's being done under a disability grant, but the total works including architects, fees from freeholder, planning fees and work itself is coming in at around £15k.

If you are only splitting it with a stud wall and don't need to add a window, I don't think you'd need any permission (except from the freeholder, if it is leasehold, as noted above).
I'm not sure whether you would need to do something to be able to sell it as a two bed in future... Might be worth asking your solicitor if they know?

We've a altered our one bed to make it into a 2 bed. It involved structural work so we notified building control and sought permission from other freeholders (we own share of freehold). We didn't need PP.
