We will be renovating a house next year and putting a new kitchen in (first time I've ever chosen a kitchen for a house I plan to live in for a long time!). Because of the shape of the space that it'll go into, the dining table will be in the middle of the kitchen, with fitted units along the walls. Both cupboard and worktop space will be tight compared to what I'm used to.
I was wondering about getting a freestanding kitchen island/butchers block to go next to the dining table (which could be moved out of the way when we want to extend the table and seat more people), and a freestanding larder for one of the corners. They won't exactly match the fitted units, but they also won't be situated right next to them.
Has anyone else done this? I.e. not had the whole kitchen matching and fitted, but had a couple of complementary freestanding pieces of furniture? Does it look good?
I would aim for complementary colours, but am worried it'll look weird. All of the brochures show nothing but perfect kitchens with everything matching.
