Help choosing sink for kitchen with wood worktop

We have decided on wood worktops for our new kitchen (IKEA- in case anyone has any advice on that!) but I am struggling with choosing a sink. We love butler sinks, but they don't seem to come with a draining board, or have the tap on the actual sink. The alternative would be a non-ikea and non under-mounted sink like this: www.worktop-express.co.uk/kitchen-sinks

However I really think the undermounted butler type one looks better.

I am concerned about wrecking the wood around the sink, and worry that this will be more of an issue with a butler type sink with no drainer and wood around the tap?

Can anyone give me their experiences/ thoughts?
Thanks in advance!

We have similar to this IKEA sink (the design's changed a bit I think since we did our kitchen). It has the tap in and goes right to the back so you don't get that horrible wet bit of wood behind the sink.

Then we have a Joseph Joseph drainer that drains into the sink (have had to raise it slightly on a wooden chopping board to meet the height of the sink, but you don't notice).

Careful about matching depth measurements if buying non-ikea, as ikea have quite non-standard sizes!

Hmmm, that link I posted, the sink doesn't actually go to the back... Seems like they discontinued our sink! So I see your issue with IKEA...

A sink range from Ikea which was hugely popular in this situation was the Domsjo but looking online now I can't seem to find it in their current catalogue which is strange. I saw it available a few months back and is still on sale in Ikea in other countries. The double version (single version was available but less popular) looks like this with wooden worktops. www.weekendcraft.com/journal/ikea-domsjo-farmhouse-sink-1-year-review

If you are looking for a sink that goes from worktop front all the way to the back they are generally referred to sit on sinks sinkadvice.co.uk/sit-on-sinks/4594101856 and are very suitable for use with wooden worktops. They can also be found incorporating a drainer and are available in a number of materials.
Villeroy and Boch do a range as shown here. www.villeroy-boch.co.uk/kit/m/Sink-unit-Double-bowl-sink--632391.html

If you look around there are others. If you decide to use an under-mounted butler type sink, make sure you keep the worktop well protected. The new-ish two pack epoxy type coatings seem to be working well.

The domsjo has been replaced by one of the havsens. It no longer goes all the way back but does have bits at the side that overhang the worktop, so it is suitable for laminates and presumably less prone to blackening wood round the edge than proper butler sinks. However you do now have the tap mounted on the worktop.

There are a couple of other ceramic butler style sinks with an overhang, designed to make them suitable for laminates so would do the job you're after on the edges, but I don't think I've come across one that does the taps too. The capel Lingfield is one such. If you don't mind steel you could go for a sit on one with slim profile that is designed to mimic an undermount effect.

We found a couple of ceramic sinks that went all the way back to the wall, such as this: www.villeroy-boch.co.uk/kit/m/Sink-unit-Double-bowl-sink--632391.html . However the edges of the worktop either side looked like they were just siliconed to the side of the sink and we felt there was a risk of water sitting on that join and eventually finding a way in. We were looking at laminate though so we had to be more careful. Also we ended up needing a wider void behind the units than we'd planned, so it was useful to have a bit of flex in the worktop depth.

We decided to go with a stand alone drainer like Peeas. Steel gives you lots more options, we just really like ceramic.

Go for the IKEA Bosjon tap. The lever is over the sink so stops drips at the back.

We have this one. From b and q. Really pleased with it and gives the traditional look we were after

Would definitely recommend the composite resin coating on wooden worktops, really good protection and great finish and we don’t have to keep oiling. Butler sink here from Howdens and no probs 18 months after installation
