V specific question re 5 amp plug / extension lead ( sorry very very boring)

But

I have in my kitchen dining room a 5 amp circuit where the 2 lamps I have and other lights come on at one flick of the switch. There is one corner I would like to put a lamp because it's a bit dark but I don't think a normal table lamp flex / lead would be long enough ( can change a plug it's the length of the lead) The plug socket is behind a sideboard ( 5 amp socket) - Would this ( below) work - i.e. one end into wall 5 amp socket and then it gives you an extension you can plug the table lamp into ? - I have probably explained that very badly and I am sure this post has made people lose the will to live but if anyone could say I could order over the internet. There is an independent electrical retailer I know of but a bit of a journey. www.amazon.co.uk/SupaLec-Amp-Extension-Lead-Gang/dp/B002AN9QIW?tag=mumsnetforum-21

Thanks all if you have taken the time to read !

I can't tell from the advert, it is not clear. It's possible that it has an American standard socket on the other end.

Are your 5A sockets small ones with a three round pins, controlled from a light switch on the wall?
www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Products/TLPT5.html

www.tlc-direct.co.uk/tcl/search?query=5amp+socket&Submit=Search

I have used extensions with rubber Duraplug plugs and sockets, but made up to suit the job. 15A round pins are still commonly used for theatrical lanterns, but are bigger.

The components are made to a British Standard and a lighting shop might have an extension to suit. Because they have no fuse in the plug they must not be mixed up with 13A square-pin plugs and sockets. Some foreign imports may be somewhat different.

The one in your Amazon ad looks surprisingly expensive.

PigletJohn - thank you for replying I thought I would have bored everyone to death.

To answer your questions - yes we have in our house normal sized plug sockets ( so the sort you could plug a hoover / toaster into)

Also we have small ( as I believe, 5 amp ) sockets, we use them for side lamps) and they are a smaller plug with round pins - and they ( I think ) are on a different circuit so when you do one switch all the table lamps come on at one time. They look like they have very round holes similar to your examples. So in layman's terms ( which is what I am ) a normal e.g. hoover or lamp the pins on the plug on the end of the lead are squarish - these I am talking about ( pins) are round and the plug on the end of the lead is smaller. But yes round pins and all switched on from one switch on the wall

The question is, we have one of the smaller round pin sockets in the wall , but it is behind a sideboard and where I want to put a lamp is probably too far for a normal lamp flex / lead to reach. We have many extension leads in this house but they are all normal proper plug ( Ie the bigger and squarer pin type ones ) - I was just wondering if there was a 5 amp extension which would go on when you switch the light on equivalent for a 5 amp plug / socket so that when the other two lights come on - this one would as well. ( Can you tell I am trying not to get someone in to move the 5 amp socket and then have to plaster over - in fact I am not sure current building regs would lt us move that socket ) So I am just looking for what would be the equivalent of a normal extension lead but 5 amp ( I can tidy it up behind said sideboard)

Thank you @pigletjohn I did think that looked expensive - at the moment I am gibberingly grateful for just understanding what will actually work. If you had any advice , be sure I would be grateful for it. Thank you for taking the time. I suppose I am hoping there is a product rather than having to have something made up especially. This is just putting a lamp on a table in the corner of the kitchen which is just a bit too far away from the little 5 amp wall socket / plug / and hoping it can join in on switching on at the same time as those other two lamps which we can switch on at one place.

Worst case I get a normal extension lead and we have to put that lamp on manually. It would not be the end of the world. I just thought a little extension lead from the 5 amp circuit would be easier , if it were possible.

I have googled but as you can see - haven't solved it.

Thank you @pigletjohn

Oh PigletJohn one more thought - I suppose I could buy a table lamp and just see if someone could extend the flex by cutting it and extending it with extra flex so I don't need the extension lead. (or is that just an accident waiting to happen ? ) Blush

If you get somebody competent, they could fit a new, longer flex to the lamp without needing an extension coupler.

Buy a few spare 5A plugs from TLC and a reel of 5A 3 core white flex, their prices are much lower than Amazon.

I just looked for Duraplug, there are some on Ebay with uninsulated pins that might be fake. There is also a coupler. The brand seems to be owned by MK now,

This looks like a part number

Ah, the 153 is 15amp , too big.

PigletJohn · 28/12/2018 07:33

BTW 5amp lighting circuits with round pin sockets are correct and permitted, but they are not installed the same way as ordinary UK socket circuits. A qualified electrician will know, especially if they have done shopfitting and are not just a "Domestic Installer" (the lowest qualification).

PigletJohn · 28/12/2018 07:36

There may be a 5A flex extension listed somewhere in here

www.mkelectric.com/en-ar/Products/WD/PortablePower/duraplug/Pages/default.aspx

An electrical wholesaler could order (might be by the dozen)

BasiliskStare · 28/12/2018 07:53

Thank you Piglet John !

I know where I can easily buy 5 amp plugs although I had not thought of the flex Blush - so thank you for that , will look up TLC . I am pretty confident now I know what I am actually asking it would be a more elegant and a tidier solution to just extend the flex - given we would not need anything else on any extension lead / socket.

So I think my plan now is to buy the lamp & get someone qualified to extend the lead / flex - I think this will be neater in the long run than trying to find an extension lead.

If not we will simply use a normal extension lead and have to turn it on each time - 1st world problems eh ?

Thank you very much though Pigletjohn for helping me with this. You have changed me from staring hopelessly at the little dark corner in my little kitchen to suddenly having A Plan. I very much appreciate your help . Thank you , very much thank you for taking so much time to help me , I do appreciate it. A very Happy New Year to you and yours.

Ha ha @pigletjohn I have a plan

A very good friend of mine's nephew is a "proper" i.e. qualified electrican If I can wait a few weeks ( which I think I can given I have lived with this dark corner for 3 years ) he will come over and as long as I have the lamp he will extend the flex .

Thank you so much - isn't it just lovely sometimes to speak to somebody who knows whereof they speak - i.e. competent.

Pigletjohn if ever you need to know about Beowulf or other Anglo Saxon poetry - I'm your woman , electrical things , well not so much. I love my husband dearly but in this instance I would rather avoid a house fire.

Thank you , really thank you .
