Light bulbs keep blowing in house

Weird one.

Light bulbs are continually blowing on the groundfloor of our house. It seems abnormal.

The up lighters (standing ones) in the living room are the most common - I thought perhaps they kept being hit by the dog or people so put one behind the TV and one behind the sofa where they are boxed in and they are still blowing filaments around once a month. One actually spectacularly shattered and blew glass across the room - luckily I'd turned away as I switched it on!

The kitchen LED light bulbs in the ceiling last around 3-5 months.

The cooker hood bulbs last about 6 months.

The oven bulb has just gone.

This last week alone 5 bulbs have gone out. This is not uncommon.

We think we have an electrical problem, but what could it be? Power surging? Or is this normal?

Someone more knowledgeable will probably be able to pinpoint what's going on. It does sound as though something isn't right unless you have a job lot of faulty light bulbs? The lighting should be on a separate circuit from the sockets. You've got lamps plugged into sockets which are blowing as well as ceiling lights.

Poltergeists.

But seriously I'm placemarking because out house is the same though not as bad as yours. The electrician who did a survey for us said something about the wrong electricity coming in and to phone the electric company but I thought he was winding me up - like getting the apprentice to ask for tartan paint.
I'll look out the report later and see if I can find anything useful.
In the meantime, book an exorcismGrin

Are you in a terrace or semi detached? Ours did this in our old house when our neighbour was growing weed in his attic. It was so well insulated we couldnt smell it until we went up into our loft, then it was astonishing. The power they were using was causing us problems.

Terraced house. I'm an ex Detective - I'd be mortified if I've deskilled so much I can't spot a cannabis farm any more! 😭😭

All different bulbs, we've started buying different brands to check that.

Poltergeist may be the answer.

Or the wrong kind of electricity. Maybe it's too wet?

We had this, and we changed the bulbs to LEDs on the recommendation of an electrician, you get led light bulbs as an alternative to all the different types of normal bulb, and the problem has gone.

What country are you in?

Are you in an isolated area?

Most likely you have a loose connection intermittently flickering.

If it happens on standing lamps plugged into sockets, and also on ceiling pendants, it must be in your consumer unit, meter connection or incoming supply so you will probably need a qualified electrician to trace it.

How old is your wiring?

Are there traces of smoke or black tar around your incoming supply? Hot or cold?

If it's lights in the fittings and plug in lamps etc, then as other PP have said they would run off different circuits. It could be power surges, but you'd probably have other things blowing fuses as well, like the telly etc.

What kind of bulbs do you use?

MotorcycleMayhem · 27/12/2018 17:18

LED are definitely worth a go in the up lights so I'll try that thank you, but the LED bulbs still blow very quickly in the kitchen where they are the main source in lighting in the ceiling fitting.

Might be a neutral fault in the street or overhead cable. This is uncommon and would affect other houses in your street. May occur on very old cables or ones that have met a digger.
