We are potentially relocating to Manchester for my DH new position he will be based in central Manchester. I have no clue of the city and have only ever been on a few nights out there. Can anyone give me a brief low down or recommendations the areas just to narrow down on where I should look/what to expect.

What are you looking for in terms of the amenities of the area, means of commuting and commuting time? What is your budget for how many bedrooms too?

The usual MN recommendation is the more expensive suburbs in Trafford, which has a grammar school system.

We live just in Derbyshire, on the edge of the Peak district. Transport links are good - 30 minutes by train to Piccadilly and the airport is half an hour away via the new airport relief road.

Can you give us a list of requirements (city / suburb / rural) (exciting vs mundane) (restaurants) (kids / ages / school?)

And a budget, as some areas of Manchester are dearer than others!

Depends on your budget really. I used to live in Prestwich, it's a nice area and quick to get into town by bus or tram.

Pearlgrey1 · 22/12/2018 21:23

Sorry
Preferably a 30/40min commute by public transport We have one dc who is only 2 so schools are not necessary atm but obviously would be in the near future. We would initially be renting around 1500pcm min 3bed until his position is finalised. When it comes to amenities decent park / supermarket/ the odd restaurant. We are also used to living in ethnic diverse areas so would prefer a mix of people.

didsbury or chorlton both have great places to eat, good schools, nice green areas and lots of easy access to city centre. trams, trains and lots of buses.

I don't know about rent in Prestwich because we owned but it is next to Heaton Park which is lovely and has a decent supermarket/small shops/pubs/restaurants. It is a fairly white area although has a big Jewish population. Cheetham Hill is closer to town and a bit more diverse if that's important to you.

it's probably a good idea to rent where you want to buy.... so what's your purchasing budget? as healthy rent budget. ....and what type of house do you want? semi? detatched? period? all affect area choice... .do you have any key requirements... off road parking? garden?

happytoday73 · 23/12/2018 08:10

ok all these areas are worth looking at but different from each other price/env/houses etc... but worth a drive around to dismiss!

-altrincham

(good transport, trans, schools & houses but the main road a56 puts some(me) off as it's incredibly slow)
Didsbury and chorlton ... chorlton is more edgy but cheaper and has some lovely period houses
monton/ellesmere park are often forgot about
urmston is good suburb option also with good schools, resteraunts and fast but v overcrowded train.
I also realky like prestwich
if wanted more rural/ hills would go out beyond Stockport on train route as suggested previously or Ramsbottom (but commute for this wouldn't be good)
big difference is house prices...
good luck!
