Corian vs Granite

Hi all,
Just wondering which direction to go with worktops? We'll most likely go with corian or granite and wondered what peoples experiences were with each.

Many thanks

Sorry, not relevant, but when I saw your title I assumed it was another daft baby name thread...

KeysHairbandNotepad · 22/12/2018 07:29

I thought it was a baby name thread too. I need coffee.

Milly90 · 22/12/2018 07:32

Hi op watching with interest

I am considering quartz or granite but never even looked at corian so will be interested to hear what people think of this as a worktop

And haha at pp Grin

My mum had white corian installed about 7 years ago with the moulded sink - it looks lovely but is a completely nightmare as any spills always mark the surface - we all hate it. SIL has had black granite for more than 20 years which still looks amazing.

Onatreebyariver · 22/12/2018 08:12

My mum picked Corian over granite after being a granite lover her whole life. She loves it so much she is having it put in her holiday home too.

Much quieter than granite. Granite is loud when you put things on it. It’s warmer than granite. Granite is cold. And she loves that it moulds in one smooth piece for the sink and splash back.

Simplepimple just use barkeepers friend.

It wipes anything off easily and nothing will stain. It’s the best cleaner for corian.

simplepimple · 22/12/2018 08:32

Thanks Onatree - I'll get some and try it.

Corian is great. We had it in our last house for around 10 years. It was the buttermilk colour and I used to pour neat bleach on any stains - from curry to halloween makeup and it cleaned it up beautifully. What other surface can you do that on!

fabulousathome · 22/12/2018 09:20

You can do it on granite, but it doesn't need it. I have blue pearl coloured granite. No marks whatsoever and it's still shiny and beautiful.

pepperjack · 22/12/2018 09:35

I've had all 3
Quartz is lovely, lots of colour choices.
Can put pans down on it no probs with stains, bit of jif. Needs cleaning, then drying/buffing to look nice
Granite- the same but I don't really like the patterns.

Corian- my kitten designer raved about it, I'm still getting used to it. It marks more than I thought, but again all disappears with a bit of jif. Again needs cleaning and drying/buffing to look good. But you can't put hot stuff down it, not quite sure what happens, but it's a bit of a faff.

wowfudge · 22/12/2018 10:15

We have Tristone on our large island top - it's a composite just like Corian, but cheaper.

SherlocksDeerstalker · 22/12/2018 10:19

I have Superwhite granite (carera marble effect) and its lush. It’s my absolute favourite thing about my kitchen. It’s 3 years old now and still looks pristine. The Iroko on the island however is another story... Hmm

lucy101101 · 22/12/2018 10:20

I used to have corian but with an underset stainless steel sink (would never have a sink which wasn't stainless steel after having every other kind and hating them). I loved it!!! Will have it again once I revamp current kitchen... I find granite very hard and cold, not a fan.

pepperjack · 22/12/2018 12:13

I've got stainless steel bottoms on my sinks, because of boiling water tap, but I couldn't deal with staining in the sink

fairislecable · 30/12/2018 17:10

I have quartz no staining or marking or faffing about I have had it 15 years it still looks good.

The laminate in the utility has just been replaced with corian, it feels plasticky and means I have to ensure the iron is completely cool before I can put it away.

I would like to turn the clock back and have anything but the corian.

pistmaschristmas · 30/12/2018 17:25

Granite here
I find it chips really easily although I think we made a bit of a poor choice with the supplier so could be quality related. Still cost a bomb though !,,

bouncydog · 30/12/2018 18:44

No problems to date with granite. Cleans easily and always looks beautiful. We use HG stone cleaner.

SheldonandPenny · 30/12/2018 18:55

Definitely granite or quartz over corian for us. Granite is wonderfully hard wearing.. pans straight on it, no stains or marks ever. A local stomemason sourced and fitted so it was solid granite. (Watch out for kitchen suppliers who provide whas actually a veneer of granite over wood composite boards. Nothing is as good as real granite. We have star galaxy and it really makes the kitchen. It's black with little sparkly copper flecks.

HumourlessFeminist · 30/12/2018 18:57

I also thought this was a baby name thread 😂. I really need to go back to work after this holiday.

mando12345 · 30/12/2018 21:40

I've got white corian, I love it, i clear up in the morning the previous nights dinner and have no problem with stains. I have the corian sink with a stainless steel bottom.
I don't buff it just wipe down with a really wrung out cloth.

MarmiteTermite · 30/12/2018 21:53

We have had Ivory fantasy granite now for 5 years - it’s girgeous and even though it’s pale it hasn’t stained at all. Love it!
