How much should a bathroom refurb codt

We want to redo a horrible bathroom (ugly, mouldy, leaks into living room etc). Started getting quotes, to rip everything out, put in new shower, new flooring, new tiles, install an extractor fan, replaster ceiling, repaint walls, new loo and basin with built in units, towel rail instead of rusty radiator. First quote is just shy of £5k and we will have to buy tiles, shower, flooring etc as well. DH thinks that is way too much. I think it’s probably what you would expect to have to pay here ( neighbours had similar job and many quotes came in around £8k).

That is, how much should it cost!

Unfortunately that sounds about right. I paid just under £4,000. What kind of shower are you having?
Same thing with the tiles. Said prices can vary so much and to buy your own.
I'm in the Midlands btw.

Looking to do my bathroom so watching this thread too. Im in greater London & from previous reading seems it could be 6k all in. Top tiles are currently doing a sale fyi but a friend did advise going to an independent retailer

mommybear1 · 21/12/2018 17:12

Agreed sounds right my dad has just had his done and it's come in at 6k excluding tiles. We are in the West Midlands.

They won't break the price down for you but it would be interesting to know. I mean the actual 3 piece suite you can get for £220.

I think £4-6k is about average.

We did ours for just under £5k, we bought all the tiles/paint/suite ourselves. We got Laura Ashley tiles but shopped around online and used Victorian plumbing for everything else. I'd avoid farrow and ball paint at all costs, we went for Hague blue and condensation has left marks all down it! (Based in London/Surrey border)

Our en-suite has cost 2k and we got a shower and surround for free.
We're expecting to spend around 4 on the main bathroom, again we've been lucky enough to get the shower, surround and a radiator for free.

£4 - £8K sounds right - depends on things like how much pipework to move around, how much tiling, whether separate bath and shower, cost per square metre of chosen tiles, how fiddly the tiles are (mosaic tiles cost more to fit), whether any walls or doorways to move around, whether any radiator, how much storage, whether toilet floor standing or wall hung (latter more expensive), the brand and cost of toilet, shower, bath, taps, sink etc (remember that often times you get what you pay for so be careful with cheaply priced products - they look as good when first installed but they get shabby more quickly)

Didsomeonesaybunny · 23/12/2018 01:09

That sounds pretty reasonable to me. I had a refurb (no plastering though) and it cost me £12k

FredaNerkk · 23/12/2018 01:17

Just re-read the description of the work you need done: It's at the upper end of bathroom renovation (e.g. replastering ceiling is not normally required). And what about lighting (ceiling; and mirror?) So I think £5K plus client to supply fittings and tiles sounds reasonable. Best way to check is to get three quotes, and ask to speak to recent clients.

NB that when client supplies tiles, builders also generally expect client to pay for adhesive and grout.

We are having our main bathroom done. Similar level of work to you. Quote is £2500 for plumbing and labour etc. We’ve spent another £4K on fixtures & fittings.
