Living in Burnham

Hi all,

Husband has been offered a new job, we are now looking to move to Burnham. This allows us to remain close to family as well as the commute to work for my husband is not to bad. I have a one year old son. What are your opinions of the area? Is it worth considering? I am thinking long term so schooling also needs to be considered. Any advise would be appreciated.TIA

Burnham near Slough? Check out the primary schools and live in catchment or make sure you meet the entry criteria for the C of E school if you prefer that. The schools vary so see which one you like.

Burnham Grammar - it’s a Grammar! It’s selective with the test taken in y6. The secondary school alternative isn’t the best.

If it’s another Burnham - ignore the above.

Burnham is nice. Leafy south Bucks, the Grammar is excellent and not so hothousey as some of the other Bucks grammars. The local non selective secondary, however is in special measures, very under-full (over 60% vacant) and consulting at present about whether it will close in a year or two.
Small Historic style high street, but good transport links to other places. It will eventually be on Crossrail, along with Taplow, Slough, Langley and Iver. So distance to the station may be an important factor (but will also impact on house price/value). Generally the area is nice, though I don’t know of any specific bits to avoid.

Just to update this thread - the area is not that nice and has been suffering from increasing anti-social behaviour. There are comparatively few working professionals commuting to London. Would not recommend.

Too close to Slough.

Pipsquiggle · 04/08/2024 22:08

We looked at moving here. Some nice parts and other areas a bit too close to Slough.
You need to look at the catchment for the grammar school, it really is quite small. Also have a plan if they don't pass 11+.
The trains are not as frequent as those to Maidenhead/ Reading.

We liked Burnham, we live fairly near. I haven't heard about the antisocial issues mentioned above

Elizabeth line (crossrail) is up and running, has been for a long time.

Burnham trains aren't as frequent and tend to be slower - stop everywhere.

Yes Pipsquiggle, but I posted that back in 2018….6 years ago!!!! At that point Crossrail hadn’t opened….so past me was right, but you’ve reopened a Zombie thread from 2018z

The Slough in-cachement for Burnham grammar school is quite small : you have to live in a specific corner of the Slough part of Burnham (I have children at BGS).
If you live in South Buckinhamshire addresses, then you are in cachement: there are several miles of in-cachement distance for BGS, children get in from Stoke Poges, Iver Heath, Iver and Fulmer, Farnham Royal. they have two bus routes that serve these.

Quite right though that you need a back up: there is no comprehensive in Burnham (the old one I referred to back in 2018 did close: and Bucks CC are apparently cutting the bus services to Bourne End Academy which is the next nearest Upper School.

@Aethelfleda can't believe I fell for a zombie thread 😫

😆So easily done though!
interestingly the local community is campaigning to reinvent the old comprehensive as part of a multi academy trust, linked to the grammar and a couple of primaries. we’d better revisit this thread in 2030…
