Why can't we drill into this window frame?

Our new roller blinds have arrived and we want to put them up. DH has started drilling into the window frame where I've ringed it in the picture, but is finding it really difficult. The drill bit isn't going in. Surely it is just wood? Should he just perservere or is there a reason we shouldn't be drilling it?

He could top-fix the blind instead but we're assuming that will be a steel beam.

I attach them to the wood strip attached to the wall above the window. I wouldn't have thought about having a roller blind inside the window frame.

I wouldn't have drilled into the window frame either that seems quite odd. Why do you think steel beam above? If there is one, then at the side. I'd assume you might split the frame if you drill into it.

Is it pvc?

Is the drill bit blunt?

Vitalogy · 19/12/2018 20:06

*I had this the other day, blunt.

Is it reinforced behind the wood?

We had a new window ( different size) put in our kitchen and wanted a roller at the same position as you, OP. The builder warned us against top fixing because of the steel mesh form ( not a beam) that was beneath the plaster on the top and sides. There wasn’t enough space on the frame to put the fixing on vertically :/

Ok, it's up now - we top-fixed it in the end. Hopefully it won't fall down!

If it does, fix a strip of wood across first, then screw the brackets to that.
