Hi ladies, I needed some advice please.

I have a lovely, large wooden chest of drawers in my living room. It is made from pine and it is black (most likely spray painted by the manufacturers). It is similar to this (but mine is black and in a matt finish):
www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PINE-FURNITURE-AYLESBURY-4-6-DRAWER-WELLINGTON-CHEST-NO-FLAT-PACKS/132253662535?hash=item1ecaeebd47:g:lJYAAOSwA3tXoTcO

Anyway, we are planning to start using it as a TV table. It is in good condition, but there are some places where the paint has chipped off and because it is a matt finish it picks up finger marks quite quickly.

I do not want to have to repaint the whole chest of drawers, but what could I do to repair the few chips that I have got? Also what kind of door knobs would give it a modern look? And is there anything I can paint over it like a varnish to protect the surface and to stop it picking up finger marks? I don't want too much of a glossy finish.

I am on a budget and I don't want to spend too much time on it but as it will be more or less a centre piece in our room I need to spruce it up a bit.

All suggestions welcome. Thanks

Try Etsy for ideas re knobs(!), handles etc. Chalk paint for the chips? Or enamel paint? Depends if you need a matt/eggshell/shiny finish. Lots of finishes available. Can you take a drawer to a DIY store & ask which paint would be best?

Fragments of 'gold ' leaf glued on in a random way, over the chips and in other places too to balance them out.

Gold handles to match perhaps? Metallic leaf sheets are available on Amazon and eBay.

Thank you for your reply. I have repaired the chips with bits of chalk paint and now I want to varnish over the whole drawers to protect it from further damage. What's the best product to use? And will I need to lightly sand over the surface? I don't want any more paint to chip off. Can anyone recommend the best varnish product to use? I'd like something with a slight sheen (not too glossy).

You can get satin varnishes, might need a couple of coats.

Search for Dead Flat Varnish. I saw it recommended on Instagram and it is great. Goes on white but dries mat and you can't tell it's there. We got a big bottle from Amazon.

Dead flat or matt varnish would work well, or you can pick up satin or eggshell varnish from B&Q. For handles I would go for something like these:

Check out @doneupnorth on Instagram who does it for a living - great inspiration

Or you could put a wax on it to give it some depth and protect it. Coloured? Limed?
