Hello
I’m sure I seem to remember this being possible.... has anyone heard or done this or am I making it up in my own mind ?
Thank you

My parents did it on their semi (raised the roof for better loft conversion so you could stand up) but theneighbours did it at the same time - not sure if you can do it alone but I'm probably wrong just likely to be more complicated

It's known as raising the ridge. You need planning permission and usually others in your street (pref neighbour as pp said) need to have done same.

Thank you

Do you mean raising the whole roof or a hip to gable conversion (when the sloped bit on the side of the roof is raised)? Ring your local council planning department and ask if this is something they'd consider, or check if there is any info on their website. You could also have a look through previous local planning applications to see if anything similar has been allowed - planning apps should all be online, and may be searchable depending on where you live.

I’ll do that because the actual bit I wasn’t raising isn’t attached to next door it’s at the back of the property but I fear can be seen from the road as the roof at the front would be lower, but it wouldn’t affect anyone’s light or view

If it can be seen from the front it will need planning permission. We did this with our neighbour - planning permission took ages and cost a lot as we had to pay for a legal agreement saying that neither of us would do it without the other. It's been a nightmare actually - not the work, that got permission after 8 months and and looks fantastic, our problem was that our neighbour is a massive f*wit and a year on has still not completed his building work. We can't sign off our planning conditions because of him . But aside from that it's been great! Grin

Our neighbours are in the middle of doing this so we’re having to put up with months and months of noise, banging, drilling, sawing and mess. If you’re going to do it please don’t underestimate how miserable it is for the neighbours. You could make it much more bearable if you at least acknowledge that, and I’m sure the occasional gift or bottle of wine would be very much appreciated.

ScarletAnemone - my neighbors sneaked there’s through whilst we were abroad, making our house unrentable whilst the work was going on.... 6 months worth we lost out on because of them. Revenge will be sweet

Oh that’s infuriating. I’m trying very hard not to get too resentful as I’d really like to have a good relationship with the neighbours when they eventually move in, but my patience is wearing very very thin.

ScarletAnemone - they generally nice people unless anything affects them in any way shape or form then the niceness vanishes

I feel your pain though, you’ve not even meet them and they owe you one or two already
