Can someone help me with a wireless thermostat?

I bought a wireless room thermostat which was supposedly plug and play for my boiler model, but it doesn't seem compatible.

So, I'm going to take it back and get something else. I currently don't have a thermostat on a wall anywhere, so it's not a question of wiring the new one in to that.

Can anyone recommend remote room thermostat that is DIY-able to install with a gas combi boiler?

Hive or nest?

FaceLikeAPairOfTits · 15/12/2018 18:03

How are they connected though? The instructions I've seen online for a self-install all talk about removing the old wall thermostat and attaching the new one using the same wires. We don't have a thermostat on a wall anywhere.

Have you looked on the wall nearest to the boiler? When we had a wireless thermostat installed there was a box that went on the wall where the old boiler control had been and a separate wireless thermostat and a box that plugged into our WiFi router (that was Hive v1)

I can’t see anything at all. We put a new boiler in about 4 years ago and the installer asked if we wanted a wireless thermostat but we were so skint at the time we said no.

We had a boiler with no thermostat and when we got a wireless nest we paid someone to fit it. I think it cost £80 (we’re in London tho).

GodThisIsShit · 15/12/2018 19:27

I have an RF remote thermostat it's this one:
https://www.screwfix.com/p/worcester-bosch-mt10rf-mechanical-rf-thermostat/96405?kpid=96405&cmmmc=GoogleeDatafeeded--Heating%20and%20Plumbing&dsskid=43700024226184732&dsrl=1245250&dssrl=1249478&dsrl=1249478&dssrl=1245250&gclid=Cj0KCQiA6dLgBRDoARIsAJgoM4s5F8N-F2pvVdmjiU6ZhsKOn9cS25-78QaeTPRGXPK9wlQlYHhISUaAlhCEALww_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

It has two parts, the receiver which fits in the boiler and then the remote wireless transmitter. When you replace the remote, the new remote has to be "paired" with the receiver, takes a gas engineer a couple of minutes. Perhaps you didn't pair the unit to the receiver?

OlobobTop · 15/12/2018 19:45

Is it built into the boiler? We had a thermostat on the wall but it wasn't connected to anything and the only thing we had was a thermostat on the boiler where we had to set the timer/ turn it on etc. It was hidden under a flap though so might have to go looking.

Mayrhofen · 15/12/2018 21:22

My wireless thermostat has a base unit wired into the boiler. The wireless bit is now fucked and won't reprogramme, the plumber says it comes as a unit with the base unit so I have to replace the lot.

Are you sure you bought the right product?

FaceLikeAPairOfTits · 16/12/2018 08:46

Whether it is the right product is up for debate I think, certainly the supplier said it was suitable for all models of this brand, but the video we watched in how to install it seemed to show a cable we don’t have. There is a possibility that the original installer removed it I suppose as we didn’t buy the thermostat.

I guess the thermostat could be built in, certainly there are settings on the digital panel to increase/decrease the temperature of the output, there’s just nothing that measures the ambient temp in the house.

Bugger, the thermostat we bought was a lot cheaper than Nest of Hive, and it looks like whatever we buy we’re now going to have to pay installation on top.

Thanks for the link to your one, God, I suspect it’s suitable for Worcester Bosch only, but it’s the same plug and play idea.

What unit did you buy? Am I being daft, how is it wireless if it needs to be wired in? Do you mean WiFi connected or wireless? The 'standard' version I have is as pp said, a unit in boiler that connects to a thermostat that can be placed anywhere in the house. Cost me about £150 with fitting to replace when last one conked out. There are lots of different models though with more or less functions.

Hive is different right? That's a WiFi enabled controller.

FaceLikeAPairOfTits · 16/12/2018 09:51

Sorry, I mean radio frequency.

I have a Vokera boiler. The RF thermostat we bought is in two parts, one part sits in the room where you want to regulate the temperature, and it can be wall mounted if you like but it runs on batteries. It communicate with the receiver unit that attached by magnet to the side of the boiler. Crucially the receiver unit supposedly just plugs into a connection inside the boiler but this doesn’t appear to be in evidence in our boiler.

So, we’re now looking at something like a Nest or Hive it seems, but my issue is that the only way to self install these seems to be if you have an existing wired in thermostat that you swap out for the Hive or Nest unit.

There is no such thing as a “wireless” thermostat as at some point part of the thermostat has to tell the boiler to turn on/off

Anyway - are you saying you have no current temperature control over your heating? (Other than turning valves on your radiators). A normal set up is to have a timer (when the heating should turn on and off) and a thermostat (turns on/off the heating if it reaches a certain temperature). If you don’t have the latter you’re going to need a gas engineer to fit any thermostat you choose (wired or wireless)

FaceLikeAPairOfTits · 16/12/2018 10:47

We have valves on the radiators but they don’t seem to adjust the temperature but they do work to turn the radiators off. We can adjust the temperature of the radiators and water on the boiler itself but only on a sliding scale (like the battery indicator on a phone) rather than by setting an exact temperature.

It looks like the way forward is going to be Nest or Hive and get an installer to put it in. Grr, wish we’d just found the hundred quid when we put the boiler in.

I’ve managed to lose mine (remote panel but not digital or an app) so definitely go with an app 😏

sdaisy26 · 16/12/2018 13:41

We didn’t have an existing wired thermostat but dh fitted a hive recently. He’s a fairly proficient diy-er, nothing more. He says he had to access the boiler to wire the main controller in, then you can put the hive thermostat bit anywhere.

FaceLikeAPairOfTits · 16/12/2018 15:47

That sounds like the job, sdaisy. Did the instructions say how to wire it into the boiler?

OP posts:
FaceLikeAPairOfTits · 16/12/2018 19:39

@sdaisy26, woukd you mind telling me which Hive model you have?

OP posts:
sdaisy26 · 16/12/2018 20:20

We got it on Black Friday (was about £109 from screwfix). DH says just the boiler one (we have combi boiler, no hot water tank). He says ummm sort of had the instructions but he supplemented with YouTube videos.

sdaisy26 · 16/12/2018 20:20

He thinks instructions were easy to find, he looked on YouTube for our boiler model plus hive

sdaisy26 · 16/12/2018 20:21

£100 not £109

FaceLikeAPairOfTits · 17/12/2018 06:08

Thanks!

OP posts:
ChristopherTracy · 17/12/2018 11:31

Yes DH did the same recently with a Hive/nest whatever - it was supposed to replace the old wall thermostat but that wasn't compatible so him and DS wired it into the boiler using Youtube help. We have a new Worcester.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 19/12/2018 09:04

We are getting one for our rental flat - wireless timer/thermostat. Dh phoned the combi boiler manufacturer to ask which was compatible.
Dh has now bought it and an electrician is going to install it at a cost of £140 ish. Apparently 1-1 1/2 hour's work.
