Any ideas about bedside table alternatives for when there's no space for an actual table?

Just as the title says really. After our renovation we will have very little space (20cm maybe) for a bedside table, so nowhere to put lamps, clock etc. We will have double sockets with USB connectors though. Anyone got some good ideas for how we get around not actually having bedside tables? I've thought about a shelf above the headboard but I like to sit up in bed and read and don't fancy having something above my head.

Our kids have the same Jansjo lamps that cat linked above which are brilliant but our headboard was too thick and the clips didn't fit so we have the Hektar ones which clamp on, no screws needed.

wonder what our builder's reaction would be if I told him I want to install wall lights 2 days after the wall's been plastered...

Are you having wardrobes either side of the bed (is that why space is limited) - if so then perhaps wall lamps could be mounted to the side of the wardrobes and the wiring could go up inside the wardrobe. But that may not be your layout.

Can you have a headboard made to extend past your bed with shelves on

We bought a really tiny chest of drawers that is meant to be in a bathroom that’s about 20cm across. We found it in B and Q by accident looking for something else but it fits perfectly.

Re lamps, we used floor up-lighters positioned behind the head board. They worked really well as light didn’t shine in our eyes.
