Need a new wooden front door- who did yours and how much did you pay?

Not quite the same question

but I had two (existing) hardwood back doors taken off, new hinges and locks fitted, planed to good fit, rehung. took less than a day.

If you're buying new doors, I'd recommend new hardwood frames as well. They are nowhere near as expensive as the doors. If you can paint or stain them before fixing, especially the areas that will be inaccessible, it improves protection and life. Two doors with frames took less than two days including removal of old and glazing.

Daily rate for a chippy in your area might be somewhere in the region of £200, I don't know. No amateur or handyman can hang doors as well or as quickly. Hardwood external doors are very heavy and you might injure yourself lifting them. A local chippy will also know local suppliers, who may be hidden away on an industrial estate or down a lane. Just one door is the sort of job that appeals to a semi-retired person.

Be sure you have all the matching door furniture and locks beforehand. Try not to put a letterbox anywhere near the internal keyhole or handle as there are simple tools to manipulate them.

I now only use lift-off stainless hinges, they are so much quicker to take the door on and off e.g. when planing to fit, or re-staining. Sometimes you can get them with a PVD brass (non-tarnishing) plating on Stainless, but they are surprisingly expensive.

Composite doors look really good but quite expensive as do the modern painted Aluminium ones. A good aluminium door with frame will come in at around £1200 and around £800 to £900 for a composite door and frame fitted. Not cheap I know.
