New build

Has anyone moved into a new build and done the carpets later? The one we are looking at has past the stage we can get the builder to do it, and I'm considering saving and going for much higher quality. I know it would be a hassle once furniture is in but is it doable? What's the condition of the floors like eg; are they concrete/floorboards etc? Any advice welcome please!!!!

This was 10 years ago now but my parents did this when we moved in, we just had concrete and socks! It was a hassle but was worth it in the long run (even if my room only got finished a year before I went to uni -sob-)

We had floor boards upstairs though which were fine! Bit naff but fine

I have just moved in to a new build, it needed flooring before we moved anything in. I put a carpet on the stairs and landing after we had finished everything else, painting, blinds, etc. It was horrible, made the house feel like a building site until it was done. Can’t imagine that throughout the house.

Will they not let your own carpet fitter in to do it? We're buying a new build and they said we just have to send an email authorising him to go in. The only thing is if the fitter has to take doors off then it is our responsibility to put them back (which is fine FIL is a joiner). Downstairs is concrete upstairs is floor boards.

You need to ask the builder, but likely to be concrete downstairs and floor boards up. It will be cold and not very homely, but thouroughly doable.

Our new build was bought from a small local builder. Nothing down on the floors just concrete Couldn't have moved furniture in as there was concrete dust which would have messed everything up. Builder said we could lay floors after exchange prior to completion just had to sign paperwork saying if fitter damaged anything on our watch. Could use any fitter we wanted but in the end used the one the builder used for the show home. Builder negotiated with fitter to give us a discount and he worked until late Thursday pending our move in day on Friday. Definitely get flooring done before you move in and house is empty

If you're thinking of living with bare concrete floors, you'll need to treat the concrete first with a sealant to stop all of the dust.

Ask your builder if you can get a fitter in to measure up & lay carpets & flooring before you complete. This often happens with new builds. We were luckily able to get all flooring included as an incentive, but others on the development have had fitters in afterwards in order to save money.
