Alternatives for cupboard doors.

My dd's room has double cupboard doors ( box room so no room for a wardrobe.) There is v limited room. For the doors to open outwards. What alternatives could I use besides 1 paying a carpenter to custom make something ( bi folding doors ?) Or 2 putting curtains on them. TIA

What about a zigzag folding door?

Iamtheoneandonly2018 · 09/12/2018 21:52

Kate - as I ( and DP) are not v good at DIY - do you know if they are easy to/ measure fit?

Goes off to Google

Ah! After a bit of googling I've realised I should've been clearer. The doors are more cabinet sized.

What about a roller door from the top to the floor? Like an old school garage door?

Knittedfairies · 09/12/2018 22:04

Roller or Roman blind?

SavoyCabbage · 09/12/2018 22:07

Could they not just be doorless. We didn't get doors for our dc's Pax wardrobes because we couldn't fit them in the car and now they don't want doors on them.

Savoy- daft question - won't they get dusty inside the cupboards with no doors?

I've never really thought about it!Blush Their clothes are coming in and out all of the time so I don't know if the stuff is there long enough to be dusty. They have a laundry basket at the bottom which is coming and going too.

I'll investigate further in the morning though.

What do you mean by cabinet sized? Like a kitchen base cabinet? Is it shelves or a hanging rail?

I think no door would be fine. If doing a curtain, just a voile might be easier than anything thicker.

The roller door things are tambour doors. But we can't even get DD to shut her wardrobe door as it is, so there is no way on earth she'd ever close anything more complicated.

Dr - hard to explain. It's sort of wardrobe sized with two cupboards ( think sideboard sized )- one at the top one at the bottom. Had shelves but we took two out so she can have hanging space at the bottom ( it's a custom diy thing that was probably put in by the previous owner in the 70's.

Sliding doors

Iamtheoneandonly2018 · 10/12/2018 12:41

Piglet- are they easy to install ( with two not very good dIY ers! )

it will be easier if the dimensions match something you can find ready made. What are the dimensions?

You screw a channel to the top edge and the bottom edge of the cabinet, and lift the doors into them. The top channel is deeper so you lift the door up into it and then let it descend into the lower one. Lightweight cupboard doors don't need wheeled carriages.

Some DIY sheds or wood merchants (and some mail order suppliers) will cut board to size.

The channels are likely to be aluminium or plastic and you can cut them with a handsaw using a mitre box.

This is the cupboard/wardrobe - pics taken through bunk bed end as you can tell there is no space to open doors

Curtains

LBOCS2 · 10/12/2018 14:33

Look at Jali - they do made to measure shutters and doors, and you can choose how many 'panels' they're made up of. Very reasonably priced and you can just do a straight swap.

PigletJohn · 10/12/2018 17:24

I think sliders would do well.
