good quality and reasonable price house furniture

Hi, can anyone pls suggest where to buy good quality furniture that are reasonable in price too. I am fed up going to the high streets and finding astounding prices for the simplest of the coffee table. And I have to buy furniture and not just one in our newly moved house. Any lead would be much appreciated. Thanks

It's a hard question to answer as you've not given any style preferences.

Where to look depends quite strongly on what aesthetic you're trying to achieve and also any effort you're prepared to put in.

I've bought a lot of vintage furniture because, frankly it's better made than modern equivalents and often cheaper.

That said I've also spent time/money restoring it or changing it.

In that vein I'd say you have to look past how something looks "now". Shop for items with the right size/proportions. Things like changing handles can made a huge difference as can paint.

You can pull a set of different furniture together by giving them the same "treatment" or variations of it.

On new furniture, I'd look to the sales tbh post Christmas, but decide on your "look" first so you don't buy a bargain that you come to dislike as it just doesn't look right.

Charity furniture shops. Yes, there will be a lot of stuff that's out of date/hideous (but to be quite honest, I think some of the furniture in John Lewis is out of date/hideous. But you will find some gems. And they will deliver for a tenner or so, which can be useful.

Sometimes you can pick up stuff from odd places, too. My kitchen table was picked up from the sea front 18 years ago, where it was standing with a sign saying 'Please take'. It's 1930s, and absolutely solid, and I can't imagine ever getting another table, although when I first picked it up it was only going to be a temporary thing until I could afford to buy.

Ikea. Nice designs too.

What's the budget? What's the style?

eBay, gumtree, FB marketplace for second hand that's good as new. It's amazing what you can find on there.

I bought stuff cheaply from charity shops when I bought my house and gradually replaced it with better stuff as and when I could afford it.

another vote for second hand. I've bought various pieces of furniture over the years from charity shops, eBay, second hand and antique places. Older properly made wooden furniture is so much better quality than new stuff and can be found at really good prices if you're prepared to have a bit of a hunt for it.

Some bargains I have had include a 1940s oak desk for £30 and a 1920s walnut bedroom suite (drawers, wardrobe and dressing table) for £90!

Check out your local auction rooms. I'm an auctioneer and regularly sell great quality modern furniture for a % of the cost it was new. Names like Ercol and G-Plan or Laura Ashley and M&S or John Lewis might sell for 1/10th of the original cost and look almost unused. Or go for vintage or antique and then it's amazing savings. And the ultimate in recycling too. Antique furniture is usually solid wood, will last another 100 + years and will look amazing quality compared to a Furnitureland style piece.

Ruddle91 · 08/12/2018 09:45

I have a mix of 1940s solid wood that'd already been "shabby shite"ed that I stripped back to wood and stained/waxed to my own colour taste. I have an old house with awkward alcoves - these pieces fit them and are simple not overly "vintage" looking. If I move I will take them with me as I'm rather fond of them after all the work I put in.

I also have ikea because for the price I can't complain! I even have second hand ikea. My front room has an old range solid wood bookcase & tv unit that cost me £20. I painted them a cream colour that my skirting boards are and it's lovely and simple!

I love hunting out second hand pieces and like furniture with history. If I want a piece of furniture I’ll search the second hand market first, places already mentioned.
We downsized and happily passed unwanted pieces on the other people.

NotMeNoNo · 08/12/2018 15:11

Ebay and local selling pages are great for tables, chairs, drawers.
Wardrobes often you want something to fit a particular space and you can end up with Ikea just because they are so practical.

There is also a company called Trade Secret, if you register with them they have 3 warehouses of discount furniture (John Lewis etc) it's not giveaway price but much cheaper than new, they seem to have hundreds of sofas.

Ikea do a range of quality and price, if it's lightweight and cheap it won't always last. But I'm sitting at our Norden table here we got secondhand and it is rock solid.

Second hand - ebay, furniture charity shops, gumtree

RetiredNotExpired · 10/12/2018 16:40

I'd also suggest charity shops & auction houses. Do a search for places selling ex-display items. We bought 2 fantastic leather sofas at half price from one such place and have bought a few items (bookcases & coffee table) from our nearest BHF shop.

NathalieM · 10/12/2018 18:03

Totally agree with second hand - you can find some real gems in charity shops! With a little bit of TLC you will have a lovely piece in no time :) Does take some rooting around though... Depends how much patience you have!

Bluewidow · 10/12/2018 18:07

Second hand all the way - I just love the fact it’s got history. I recently inherited my mums Nathan made corner unit. I just got second hand a sideboard to match it off gumtree for £150 it’s twenty years old. These are still sold as new, from furniture village they are £1600. This will last my lifetime 100% solid wood.

Check out local fb pages of upcyclers too.

EdisonLightBulb · 10/12/2018 21:16

Yes to ebay, I have bought a number of M&S pieces, brNd new from the warehouses that sell unwanted returns or ex display.

The company Ariane linked to is in Canada.

Wayfair are pretty good. Prices range from budget to expensive. Very well packaged & a mix of ready assembled & flat pack. We just bought a few bits for our new home & are quite impressed. All depends on your budget though of course!
