Wooden sash window restorers vs replacement. Any Sussex recommendations please?

Would you restore or replace?

If you've had restoration what did you think?

How much did your restoration cost approximately?

Any recommendations for restorers in Sussex?

Many thanks!

Depends

Restoration is great if you

A) want to preserve your windows
B) want to draught proof your windows

It’s not great if you want to reduce noise pollution. Draught proof and/or slim line double glazing will do little for this.

Expect to pay £200-£300 a window to draught proof replacing staff, part beading with new and router sash for brush strips and also replacing all hardware and cords and stripping all paint and priming, expect to pay extra for any rotten wood.

Can’t recommend any firms in your area but I would suggest getting your own painter as generally carpenters don’t make good painters.

We did ours in Hove but it was in 2005! 3 big windows in a basement flat. Cost about £800 i think. Fitted brushes to them and replaced the cords and pulleys and locks. Was definitely worthwhile. I didn't pay for painting though.

Thanks both! @droponezone who did you use? Would you recommend them? Assuming they are still going of course 😊

We did ours, also Hove and used Green Dan Sash Window Man who was great, cost in line with other quotes, friendly and did a great job.

Thanks @Enterthewolves for the recommendation!

MiniMum, my memory isn't that great unfortunately. But i think it was something like "Sash Window Man" - it was definitely a company that just repaired / replaced sash windows. It was the first thing we did on buying the flat, to try to stop the drafts in the bedroom!

We had ours overhauled by Sliding Sash Solutions a few years ago. The rotten bits were cut out and replaced, window weights re-balanced and some panes of glass replaced with sandblasted glass. I can't remember the cost but the windows are less draughty now and keep out noise in a way they didn't used to.
