North facing garden?

Looking at a semi with a long back garden which The details say gets sun in the afternoon /evening at the end. It’s lawn at the moment but is like to grow veg etc. The reason we want to move is primarily for me to have a garden.

We’ve got a south facing courtyard garden at the mo which I’ve filled with flowers, sitting spaces and have loads of slightly cramped bbqs.

Am I just going to regret a north facing garden...?

It’s only near buildings you’ll get shade

So the fact it’s long is good - you’ll get sun across most of the garden all day in summer where there are no buildings casting shadows

North facing back garden here, no bloody shade all summer in it except for within 1m of my house.

BobDobbs · 07/12/2018 07:54

Yeah if it's long it doesn't matter too much as it will still get the sun at the end

DeadBod · 07/12/2018 07:59

North having here. It's nice to have the patio doors wide open in summer, in the shade and bringing a cool breeze inside. Definitely been a plus in this years heatwave not having the sun beating down into our living space.
We have a seating area at the bottom of the garden with chairs, table etc for when we want the sun.

BaronessBomburst · 07/12/2018 08:00

My north facing garden has the sun all day as there's nothing to cast a shadow - the patio immediately next to the house is in the shade in the mornings, so we just sit on the patio at the back.
Is it overlooked?

PeridotCricket · 07/12/2018 08:38

Not overlooked.

But I am in the north west so winters are gloomy and days when it’s too hot are few and far between.

I never really understand this need for a south facing garden
I've had 3 houses that are N facing and I think I prefer it.
I get the morning sun on the patio right at the back of the house. Then from 1pm that patio is shaded so the back of the house is cool and you move to the end of the garden.
I don't want the sun blazing in every room, or to go down to the bottom of the garden to sit in the morning sun.
Unless you have a very tall house that shades the entire garden?

BobDobbs · 07/12/2018 17:58

I have a tall house and a short garden so being north facing is a pain, we have nowhere to dry washing for a start. However, I have a beautiful view but the houses on the opposite side of my road don't, so I wouldn't swap.

wineymummy · 07/12/2018 21:45

North facing here, but at the east end of the road, so to the west is other people's gardens. We have sun at the end of the garden (modest sized) all day and from early afternoon the whole garden is sunny.

Babdoc · 07/12/2018 21:51

If you want to grow veg, OP, you really need decent sunshine for several hours a day. Otherwise they’ll be at risk of mould, mildew, fungal infections and poor cropping.
If you just want plants, there are lots of shade lovers like ferns, hostas, ivies, bergenias, foxgloves, aconites etc that will thrive in a north facing plot.

I would love a north facing garden. We have a south facing and we never use it because it's too hot.

Another v long north facing garden. Veg patch at end of garden. Allotments behind Grin so no shadow.

minipie · 07/12/2018 22:04

The problem is not the garden but the kitchen. If the kitchen is at the back then n facing garden means n facing kitchen, and that will mean less sun and less light, unless you can put lots of glass in the roof.

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 07/12/2018 22:07

We have a north facing garden with a very boggy mushroomy lawn because it never dries.

jackstini · 07/12/2018 22:14

I hate my north facing garden - apart from high summer we get no sun and lawn is a damp bog. But it is only 10m long...
If you have a long garden, it should be fine
Visit at different times of day to see what it's like

Cailinnua · 07/12/2018 22:53

I have moved from a house with south/west facing garden to one with a direct north facing garden. I have sunlight in the garden all day, apart from the patio! I much prefer my cool kitchen in the summer now.

HockStock · 08/12/2018 15:33

North facing creates a pleasant and cool space in the summer. You can enjoy the sun at the other end of the garden.

Boredboredboredboredbored · 08/12/2018 15:36

Nope I would never buy a house with a North facing garden especially if you love your garden. I've only ever had an east facing until last year when I bought a house with a west facing garden. The difference to not only the garden but also the light into the back of the house is just amazing.

I'd now only buy a south or west facing garden.
