Would this be a bad idea?

Although our kitchen is a good size, due to the layout and number of windows, patio doors, stairs off it etc, there is no room for a washing machine, so it is currently in the garage. Fairly accessible from the house via kitchen, then conservatory it is not exactly convenient and in a cold Winter can be unusable due to freezing.

Our front door opens into a small lobby area which is useful to dry off the dog and keep shoes etc before entering through a second internal door to the main house. Off this lobby is currently a cloakroom with toilet and sink. I was thinking of getting rid of this cloakroom and putting the washer here, as the plumbing for it is obviously already there. However, it would mean having to remove the stud wall as the cloakroom is every so slightly too narrow for the washer. A new stud wall can’t be put up, unless it went across the current window, so effectively the washer would be in the new larger lobby and so visible to all visitors.
The cloakroom is rarely used by us as there is a main bathroom downstairs and a smaller one upstairs.
What are your thoughts please?

Sounds like a good plan to me; how about using a screen when you have visitors?

Imicola · 06/12/2018 12:53

Yes, do it, and then sort out some sort of curtain or door across it to hide and use the top for a nice plant or something.

Can't you take down the wall then box the washer in with something akin to a radiator cover? Keeps it out of sight and is sort of decorative.

Popchyk · 06/12/2018 13:07

Sounds like it could work.

Could you get a sliding or folding door to keep it out of sight most of the time?

This kind of thing.

Would this be a bad idea?

Yes on the whole, with some sort of shielding.

It might be worth pricing up changing the window to accommodate an amended wall. It's not a room where window size is critical.

Really wanted to do this as cheap as possible, so don’t want to move the window

I do like the idea of a screen though. Thanks for that suggestion.

Do you have space for it in the main bathroom? You could put it in a cabinet to hide it from view.
A shame to loose a downstairs clock room, would rather insulate the garage.

Whyiseveryonesoangry · 06/12/2018 19:45

I looked into putting it into the main bathroom, but it wouldn’t pass building regs...too close to bath or shower.
I think my DH would love to insulate and heat the garage so his precious motorbikes would be kept warm.

Could you box it in with a large full height cupboard - add shelves above to store washing powder etc.
