Why don’t we use waste disposal units

I was flicking through a kitchen brochure and happened on the (very small) waste disposal section. I know Americans use these, but why haven’t they cottoned on in the UK where the plumbing system is generally pretty good (I think Confused)

Are they bad for the environment?

Are they costly?

Do they break often?

Should I consider buying one?

Would love to chuck all my leftovers down the sink Grin and replace the stinky bin.

Please enlighten me!

I have one and wouldn’t be without it. Use it for vegetable peelings and rinsing off plates and cafetières/espresso makers. We don’t have room to compost and urban wildlife treat the food waste caddies as buffets. Doesn’t use much water or electricity.

We have one, they seem to be really popular here (NZ). Only use it for veg peelings or fruit. Would never put meat, bones, fat or anything like that in it. I must admit to not really liking it, very noisy and you have to use quite a bit of water to run it with. The switch is on the work top and I have no idea how a toddler would reach that. We have had one for 6.5 years in this house and in the previous house around 11 years. Had no trouble with them at all.
