No thermostat in rented property

Hi, we rent our house from a private landlord. When we moved in, he replaced the boiler (as it didn’t work at all) and the plumber who did this said he would need to install a thermostat. This hasn’t happened, so our only option is to either have the heating & water on or off, and have to manually turn the radiators up and down as we can’t adjust the temperature.

Our LL is now completely ignoring us, for over a month now, even though we pay our rent on time every week.

Is it the LL responsibility to install a thermostat? Can we even get one ourselves? Would a plumber have to install it? How much are we looking at, and are we even allowed to do this in a house that we don’t own?

It would best be fitted by a gas-safe heating engineer. S/he will know how to connect it, and may need to open the casing of the boiler, which usually requires qualified person.

Many like to fit wireless thermostats because it saves them the effort of running cables, but wireless go wrong more often than wired.

Thankyou for replying, do you know if it is even possible for us to go ahead with getting this done without permission from LL?

I don't know, but I don't think you should.

I'd imagine getting permission would be better; but if you could find one that could be removed from the boiler and cause no damage at the end of your tenancy, you'd probably be okay.

NB: I wouldn't recommend that, though. I'd get permission in writing!

You can do it as long as you ‘undo’ it when you leave and return the property in its original condition. (Get someone qualified of course tho).

P.s. if landlord keeps ignoring you that’s is
