Idiot’s guide to moving into a new (owned) home

I’m completing on a purchase next week- yay! I’m not a first time buyer- I previously owned a house with my husband, from whom I am now separated. I’ve been staying with my parents for about 6 months, and now completing on my own purchase. At our previous house my now ex-h handled most of the practicalities of moving, and it was over 5 years ago and I can’t really remember much.

On the day I move in, what do I do about utilities?? Will there be electricity and gas or do I need to get that “connected” somehow? Will there be hot water? I have the name of the current owner’s utilities provider from their sale questionnaire so do I phone up that company and say I’ve moved into X property on X date, please bill me? Or so I shop around online and find a good deal and ring them up? If so do I then have to tell the previous provider?

What about phone/broadband/internet?

I’ve done a council tax application online, and registered to vote at my new address. Also need to change drivers license, bank account and address at doctors. What else?! Oh and give work my new address for payslip.

Please, a total idiot’s guide on what I need to do in my first week in my new house!!

But you need to call utilities broadband water etc few weeks before or go online.there will be a moving house section.
broadband may have a six week wait to get connected

Thanks for your reply. But which utility company do I call? Do I stick with the one listed as having previously been the provider to the property, or can I pick a new one?
