GLASS IN WASHING MACHINE - HELP!!!!!

desperateforsleep2 · 28/11/2018 10:37

Dc with a vomiting bug puked all over their clothes and mine. I stripped everything off and chucked it in the washing machine. However, I forgot to check pockets in the middle of this, and forgot there was a bottle of olbus oil in one of mine. Needless to say it broke in the wash. When I opened the door there were various pieces which I've removed (large and small), but I'm concerned there will be shards remaining.
My concerns:

  1. Remaining shards could enter clothes in subsequent washes and cause injury to wearing clothes
2. Remaining shards could damage washing machine

I have googled what to do, but a lot of responses all seem concerned with damage to the clothes that have been in the wash already. However that is not my primary concern.

Can anyone advise, what should I go?????

I think you might find glass in the door seal. I’d put on a rubber glove, get some baby wipes or something else disposable and very carefully wipe that area out.

Do you still have the bits you found, so you could try to put them back together to see how much is still missing? How big were the bits you found? Any clue from their edges whether any of it broke into shards? Have you found any small shards at all, or only bigger chunks?

Keep running the machine with a towel or something that doesn't matter in it, and inspect that thoroughly for glass each time it finishes.

Shards probably would tear the thickish rubber but I do think they’d be there and need removing.

Yinv · 28/11/2018 11:08

I’d wash through the machine on empty several times as glass shards in clothes is not what you want at all.

To the left of the filter, is that a tube you pull out? If so, pull it out and direct to an ice cream tub or similar, when you open the filter the water will run out .
Do as Nessie says for cleaning it out.
For the clothing, I'd shake thoroughly outside somewhere it won't matter if there's bits of glass over a couple of pieces of newspaper, these can be folded up and binned. Then re-wash. I'd agree iron them after as any bits of glass would catch the iron.

Yinv · 28/11/2018 11:09

Meant shards wouldn’t tear rubber

Also wipe the door seal very thoroughly in all the places you can reach, it's a common lurking area for lost things and will be damaged easily by any glass.

Sorry cross posted re door seal

Almostthere15 · 28/11/2018 11:11

I'd think if they were big enough to tear the rubber you'd see them. The baby wipes/rubber glove suggestion for the seal seems a good idea, then run it a couple of times (probably a low temp as you're just flushing it aren't you).

Congrats on having nothing in the filter though. I often have hair bobbles, Kirby grips, pieces of Lego, coins and stones so youre a better housekeeper than me ;)

catsofa · 28/11/2018 11:12

Leave door open overnight to dry it out before hoovering.

desperateforsleep2 · 28/11/2018 11:12

Thanks all, going to crack on now with cleaning out door seal, re-checking drum and doing repeat washes.

ps what do you think about the hoover idea? or is this really unwise?

Sorry, just seen someone has already posted re: hoover.

Also, for all the bashing mumsnet gets in the public domain (public perception of angry women on AIBU etc) I'd just like to say that the help I'm getting on this thread is what I think MN is all about!...….people helping other people do life! Thank you again!

Will let you know how I get on!

(re: size of glass pieces, I know I got some really big bits out when the wash finished.....top, bottom, sides, but I've also seen and felt shards, that's why I suspect there could be others still there).

A sticky lint roller might be your friend here for the smaller shards. Or try and fashion one using copious amounts of sellotape.

If you're a bit worried about using your hoover, is there anyone you can borrow a wet/dry vacuum from? Like a Charles

BirdyandBee · 29/11/2018 00:29

I don’t think I’d hoover it. I’d run it a few times with something heavy in (maybe some old pillows you need to get rid of?) to really agitate the washing machine and get bits moving and hopefully out down the waste.
I’d also tumble dry and iron it all too- probably just for the first week though
