Cost of parquet flooring

Does anyone have recent experience of buying and fitting hardwood parquet? I'd love to know approx cost per m2, trying to work out whether it's even vaguely affordable!

I have it in my home although I'm ashamed to say I've carpeted over it due to the cold.

One thing I can tell you is that a good carpenter who can lay a parquet floor that won't warp, are few and far between in this day and age.

As a general idea, the older the joiner, and the more expensive he/her is, the more likely you'll get something that actually resembles a proper parquet floor.

I'd pay the trade by the day, and ask to look at previous jobs he/her has done.

It's a dying art, unfortunately.

Great advice, thank you!

No problem at all. Parquet is a beautiful thing when done properly, but there are so many facets that affect its longevity.

Type of wood, humidity, what's underneath the wood, etc etc.

I'm just not confident that modern joiners/carpenters can achieve the same end result.

But I wish you all the best. When done right it's a lovely finish (albeit a bit cold)

Good luck greenbeans. :)

For our reclaimed parquet it worked out at about £100m2 including fitting which meant cleaning and stripping the blocks, levelling the existing floor with board, laying stripping and varnishing.

AbbyMCMLXXX · 27/11/2018 21:44

Karwomannghia can I ask your warrantee on the floor, or your guarantee that it won't become uneven after 2 months of being laid?

AbbyMCMLXXX · 27/11/2018 21:54

I ask because I've seen parquet salesmen try to convince clients that putting wood on a screed that's been settling for 2 weeks is a good idea.

That screed will keep pushing moisture vertically for about the next 2 years. And wood doesn't like moisture.

Happy to be corrected though.

What is this "board" you're talking about? Chip?

We have parquet which we found under the living room carpet and had restored. The guys who did it said the cost of laying new in the NW was £100 psm. A friend had reclaimed parquet laid in their hallway 7 years ago. No idea what they paid but no issues with it not being level.

Karwomannghia · 27/11/2018 22:25

No warrantee but a crack did emerge a few weeks later and he came back to fill it. Now fine.
The crack was because the floor was uneven beneath it where we knocked 2 rooms together.
We had to acclimatise the blocks for 4 weeks in the house before he put them down.
It was on 12mm plyboard which was on top of floorboards.
The parquet seller and fitter were separate.

We’ve had the floor for nearly 2 years.

A cheaper and easier alternative to real parquet is LVT

Amtico has recently brought out the ‘form’ product which has imitated the texture of wood (stone also available) and the parquet version looks very realistic to my eye once laid. It’s still not cheap but is cheaper and less hassle than real parquet. Also comes with a long guarantee.

wowfudge · 28/11/2018 13:05

Depending on the cost of the Amtico in question, it might not be much cheaper than the real thing although it will easier to look after, agreed.

DonDrapersOldFashioned · 28/11/2018 13:12

We had some laid in an extension, to join up and match an original floor. Admittedly it was about 8yrs ago but I think it was about £125 sqm

DonDrapersOldFashioned · 28/11/2018 13:13

(Walnut)

BookwormMe · 28/11/2018 13:28

We had a 30 sqm room laid with parquet earlier this year and it cost £3,000 in total. It's gorgeous and I love it!

PurpleFlowersInMyHair · 28/11/2018 13:37

Yep the Amtico might be a similar price, but it should still be much cheaper to fit- although not as cheap as laminate of course.

Wistfulthinking · 28/11/2018 13:44

Hi

We have been quoted £72 per square metre, plus VAT for engineered parquet flooring, including floor, adhesive and fitting.

I hope this helps.

stopdropandroll · 28/11/2018 14:02

we did our own with zero experience and it was tiny little blocks about the size of a domino! hall, bedroom and living room of a flat for £100 (floor from gumtree) plus maybe £350 materials (specialist glue, varnish, sander hire, underlay etc). the mess and repetitiveness though! definitely pay someone if it’s a small area or watch youtube tutorials to fit it yourself, shouldn’t be too hard with non-reclaimed wood.

Karwomannghia · 28/11/2018 14:08

Wow stopdrop that is seriously impressive!!! I found it hard enough getting the furniture out- your patience!

threegreenbeans · 30/11/2018 17:11

Gosh I've just seen all the extra replies, thanks so much-that's super helpful!

@stopdropandroll omg that is mega impressive!!!
