Painting a concrete floor

We are doing a big renovation and I had my heart set on a parquet floor, but due to unforeseen roof issues my flooring budget has just disappeared.

I'm going to hold on to my parquet dream and save up but I need to do something temporary.

We are having sceed put down this week and it just occurred to me that once it's dried out I could paint it white which I would be happy to live with for a while.

Has anyone done this? Any tips?

That should be screed on sceed!

I wouldn't as the parquet flooring may need to be glued down and this is likely to need to fix to an unpainted surface. Check with some floor fitters on what the parquet can and can't fit onto first

A white floor?

How will you prevent anybody walking on it, or furniture touching it, or coffee dripping on it?

Sounds like the kind of thing we did to our garage floor. We used Ronseal Diamond Hard garage floor paint. It is great on our concrete garage floor because it is functional, but I am not sure I'd want it in the house.

I've done it in my garage too, definitely wouldn't do it in my house. Just live with concrete for a while. It's a bit of a sod to apply also.

If you do do it, white is defo a bad idea.

You may as well paint it till you can afford the finish you want, as unfinished concrete is the dustiest surface ever

Thanks for the Ronseal recommendation.

I know a white floor might not be to everyone's taste, it's not my first choice but I am trying to make the best of a bad situation.

Screed was put down on Wednesday, looks horrible, dirty brown and the dust is endless.

Builder is 3 weeks behind schedule as he took a 3 week holiday to Australia without telling us. House is a disaster zone, I am so upset about it but trying to make the best of it for dc who just want to put up Christmas decorations.

Floor feels very damp still, I have the heating on constant to help dry it out but I don't think it will be ready to paint for a few weeks.

I did it in a house that I lived in and it worked very well. We used mid- grey paint - slight sheen to it - and used rugs to break it up. It was a 1950s block and really it looked surprisingly good. It was easy to sweep or wipe, (pre-kids), and cheap to do.

Also did it in my garage.

I sympathise. The ronseal makes it much easier to sweep than on screed.
