Talk to me about plaster ceiling roses

Talk to me about plaster ceiling roses!

  1. Where to order from online?
  1. What size? Should it be wider than your light? We’re fitting the M&S Dexter Sputnik light.
  1. Easy enough to fit ourselves? Coving adhesive and screws...I've watched a YouTube video and it looks straight forward- any catches to be aware of?
  1. Does your light fitting fit onto the ceiling via the ceiling rose, or should the hole in the ceiling rose be wide enough to fit the light fixture directly onto the ceiling? The example I've seen shows the ceiling rose with a small hole that just allow the wires through. Hope that makes sense!

Thank you!!

Plaster roses can be fixed to the joists above (through the plaster ceiling) with screws. It's also possible to fix them with plaster adhesive, but they might fall down.

There is probably a round section moulded into the middle that you can cut out for the electrical fitting. Electrical roses are about 100mm so will conceal a hole up to that size.

Add one or two screw-in vine eyes, screwed into the joists, so you can hang your chandelier or other lamp off them.

The screw heads can be concealed with filler, before painting them, and the eyes, to match the ceiling.

BTW my neighbour has a listed building, the council's conservation officer has a list and photographs of the original features, including an ornate ceiling rose that he didn't know is actually made of polystyrene painted white.

To amuse themselves, the builders unfastened it and dropped it on the floor during one of his visits.

DIY sheds usually carry a few ceiling roses, they should be in the aisle with the coving. Fibrous plaster mouldings are very breakable so I would hesitate to mail-order.

I can't remember the brand name I've seen.

Benjamin England or something.

When I had a larger old house the drawing-room ceiling had a rose about a metre across. There's probably some formula for size of room and ceiling.
