Moving to Milton Keynes

I am planning to move to Milton Keynes and help my son to apply the Webber Independent School. Is there any good place to live near this school?
I have heard there are increasing crimes of burglary and robbery in Milton keynes. Is it safe to live here?
Thanks!

The school is in the middle of some of the less desirable areas, i wouldn't want to live around there to be honest. If you come out to Hanslope/castlethorpe sort of way would that be too far for you?

sowysir · 23/11/2018 04:21

Can you tell me why the place around are less desirable?

Some of the estates are cheaper housing, higher crime areas; Neath Hill, Fishermead and Pennylands for example have a not so good reputation for being a bit rougher. I don't want to insult anyone who lives there but I would choose to live in other areas or a village just out of MK if possible.

The Shenleys, Loughtons or Great Holm, would be nearby and 'nicer' areas. All depends on the budget though I guess!

thejollytrolleydolly · 23/11/2018 16:22

Also the villages surrounding Milton Keynes are often quieter and cheaper

RagingWhoreBag · 23/11/2018 16:37

Unlike many places, the areas towards the centre are less desirable, whereas those further out of the centre tend to be nicer. However, because of the dual carriageways, its quick and easy to get across town from one side to the other in ten minutes, so you won't be far away wherever you choose to live.

As a rule, have a look on a map and if the housing is laid out in square grids it will be an older part of the city and potentially less desirable. There are plenty of nicer estates within the city itself, you don't have to move out to a village to find somewhere nice. Best thing is to go and have a look around at some of the areas nearby and you'll soon get a feel for it.

Willen is lovely, as is the original Milton Keynes Village, the new estate of Brooklands is lovely but near the M1 so traffic likely to be more of an issue there. There are new estates springing up all the time, especially on the western side so why not pop along and have a drive around.

If you can pay to go there (it’s a GEMs school so not wonderful) surely you can afford a house in a decent area? I would look to the free Grammars in Bucks for a better education. They will still take many of the brightest children from MK who can travel to Aylesbury or Buckingham. They certainly excel in many areas.

Rachelover40 · 23/11/2018 17:07

Far better to live somewhere else unless you like stone statues of cows in fields and a high crime rate.

There are other schools.

MrsSchadenfreude · 23/11/2018 17:23

We used to live in Castlethorpe!

sowysir · 03/12/2018 01:47

Is the crime rate increasing in Milton Keynes? Is it safe to live in Milton Keynes?
As said by some of you, some areas in Milton Keynes is less desirable. Is it because the housing price is cheaper and thus poorer people live there and make the place less desirable?

I'd have thought living somewhere where the blatant snobs don't want to live would make it more desirable not less.

MsRinky · 03/12/2018 16:27

The less desirable places to live are, as in every single place in the UK, those affected the most by the index of multiple deprivation. You can look up anywhere in the UK, including Milton Keynes on this map vis.oobrien.com/booth/#

Red is for the most deprived (and cheapest) areas, dark green is for the least deprived (and most expensive) areas. Snobbery doesn't really come in to it, other than that quite a lot of people have the vapours about being seen to live in Milton Keynes, which is why villages where one can pretend to live in Buckinghamshire instead are so popular.

Crime in Milton Keynes is bang on the average for places of similar size and demographics. It's as safe to live there as it is in any other large town with high employment.

It seems odd to want a fee paying school and then not be able to live in a better area.

brizzledrizzle · 03/12/2018 18:18

thank you @copercabana my inner bitch was feeling irritable last night Grin

Jojoanna · 03/12/2018 18:34

brizzledrizzle well said

Ffs shut about about concrete cows 🙄

BadgerWithRice · 03/12/2018 18:55

Ime because the design of Mk has intentionally centralised a lot of the night life and employment, many of the more central estates house more HMOs and flats. This is probably why some of those estates are seen as rougher, although you will find there are nice areas in the central estates as well.

Locally estates such as Fishermead, Eaglestone and Conniburrow are known to have more issues in terms of drug / teen-young adult gang fighting etc so I’d avoid those areas if that would put you off

Most other estates are perfectly fine. The villages recommended above have good primary schools but no secondary so the older children feed into secondary schools inside MK.

The North Mk estates (Broughton, Middleton etc) are nice and there are some newer shared ownership properties in those areas as well if you are looking on a budget.

Hope that helps OP

And Badger! Nice to see more balanced views!

sowysir · 04/12/2018 00:19

For Bradville, New Bradwell, Stantonbury, Oakridge Park and Great Linford, which place is the better place to live? Which place is not so good?

OP posts:
RagingWhoreBag · 04/12/2018 00:49

Oakridge Park is nice, modern newly built estate. Great Linford is also lovely, nice villagey feel and lots of different types of houses there, some proper old and characterful, others more modern. I’d live in either of those. Stantonbury not so much and the other two and are a bit in between IMHO.

AlanThePig · 04/12/2018 20:39

DD lives in Walnut Tree. Quiet area, she loves it.

tahirsplace · 17/05/2019 17:26
