Multi-fuel stove - but no chimney...

We have a 70s style house with no chimney and the gas fire flue goes through the wall cavity and out of the roof.

We have recently come in to some money (thanks to hard working husbands bonus) and beings as the gas fire and flue is totally kaput we thought this money could be used to replace it.

We had previously considered a bioethanol fire as it was the cheapest option and we don’t really use it anyway: it’s more a focal point or for the occasional yearly boiler-break down or power cut. However we saw a nice slimline stove in a shop window yesterday and thought it would look nice and be a good option.

Has anyone been able to have one fitted and do you think £2k is enough? We have a wooden surround we would like to keep so it would just be the stove, glue and tiling. Thanks in advance!

We’ve just been through this and found that our flue was next to useless for other than another similar gas fire. To have a multi fuel or wood burner, we would have had to install a twin wall flue system - this is an exterior chimney which would go up the side of the house, so not an option if you’re in a terrace. They don’t look lovely and are expensive....we were quoted 3.5k for the flue system and a mid range stove by 2 different companies.

Ah ok, I thought I migt be a case of having one of those. Luckily the wall is a side one on our property and you wouldn’t be able to see it from the road or from inside the house because of where it would sit, but the cost doesn’t sound very pleasant! Hmm, maybe it’s going to remain a “pipe” dream Wink
