MDF or real wood for alcove cupboards?

Which would you use & why? I need alcove cupboards with shelves fitted above. I don't mind mdf shelves but I'm thinking I'd want the cupboard made out of wood.. What do you think? Any other points to consider before I go ahead?

What is the price difference. I'd prefer wood.

Just had an electric meter boxed with mdf (didn't realise that it wasn't gonna be in wood) and the corner of one door has slightly 'chipped off' prior to painting. Not keen on mdf at all tbh (off-gassing and all that), but for the price it cost and the fact it won't get a lot of wear/useage it's okay. Not sure I'd feel the same for alcove cupboards and shelves.

MDF does not shrink or warp or crack and is widely available, I think certain woods are more suitable for doors and cupboards than others, tulip wood is suitable and oak is also used but oak will show the grain, do you want a smooth finish or a textured wood finish? Are you intending to paint?
