Tennant broke washing machine

Not sure if this is the right place to post this.

I have a rental house. The Tennant has broken the Washing machine by trying to wash a door mat in it.

Should I pay for the replacement or should she?

I am not sure how you can be sure that the mat was responsible. Things break down all the time. It often happens when you are using said item. In this case you need to get it repaired. I think you would need to prove that they were using it in an exceptionally unreasonable way for them to be responsible. Even if they did replace, you wouldn't be able to get them to pay for a new one.

Can it not be fixed?

How do you know why it broke?

wowfudge · 13/11/2018 19:58

Is it actually broken? If one item which is heavy when wet is washed, the machine drum can be unbalanced and it won't spin correctly.

WerewolfNumber1 · 13/11/2018 19:59

I don’t understand how washing a door mat would break the machine? Are you sure that’s the cause?

Flooffloof · 13/11/2018 20:04

Is it in the inventory?
Is it broken?
A new one can cost £170
Is it worth fighting over if it's actually broken?

Whalehello2 · 13/11/2018 20:11

It has worked fine until now and it's less than a year old. The Tennant said it broke after she tried to wash the outside doormat (a thick, bristly one)....

I provided a manual with the washing machine, I need to check it but I'm pretty sure it will state that the machine should only be used to wash clothes.

My other half who is pretty handy has had a look at it and has said blocked the machine completely and blown the circuit board. I'm not sure if this is repairable and if it is who could do such a thing.

I feel like it's not my responsibility to pay for it to be fixed when it's been used incorrectly....anyone had a similar experience?

It's a combined washer drier. Cheapest one in Curry's is £290

Well there's a another thread on here somewhere on which the OP admits to being a bit flakey when it came to setting the boiler, and asking the landlord for an emergency plumber when she could have fixed the problem herself using the manual. Everyone jumped down her throat saying she should pay and if she didn't she should expect her landlord to give notice. So on that basis, I think you should ask the tenant to pay...

In reality, though, I think you'll pay yourself. And curse, and issue more detailed instructions next time.

wowfudge · 13/11/2018 20:29

Ooh - that does sound bad! What a weird thing to do. I'd suggest (to the tenant) that buying a new doormat would be a better option next time around.

HoustonBess · 13/11/2018 20:40

It sounds like you'd be entitled to a like for like replacement paid for by the tenant, so a second hand one about the same as the broken one. Not the full cost of a new one.

mumsastudent · 13/11/2018 20:46

that's what her deposit is for -get bill from mechanic and keep as proof - check with your deposit company - (my deposit??) when she/he leaves - I think you may have grounds not to replace this as she broke it -this is one reason why many landlords don't supply white goods

mumsastudent · 13/11/2018 20:50

op do you mean one of those heavy brush ones how old was this - idiot? re other story and the boiler was it low pressure?

It's a student let. Masters student so at least 21. Hence being let with applicances.

I'm looking for second hand ones at the moment....not a lot of choice where we live (rural) plus associated hassle of collecting/installing/taking away broken one.

I will try to find someone who can fix it and get a quote first as that would be less hassle.

It was brand new less than a year ago and yes it's on the inventory.

Was the washing machine supplied on a 'goodwill' no fix, no replace basis ?

Whalehello2 · 13/11/2018 20:56

Yes. Thick, outdoor mat with thick bristles.

Hmm

Because it's an all inclusive student let it needs a washing machine and drier. The nearest launderette is up a massive hill and not a lot of students have cars.

Noqont · 13/11/2018 20:58

She should pay for the replacement.
