Removal of chrystotile asbestos

Hi there

Does anyone know if you can remove this type of asbestos yourself? I see it’s not one of the dangerous ones.

We got a quote over £5k to remove from essential areas only which seems very steep to me especially as it’s not even putting it right.

Any advice please?

Putting it right ie there will be holes in walls/ missing wall/ no plaster on ceiling after removal of plaster boards containing asbestos.

We really can’t afford this work for the price we are paying as it’s going to be about £10k to put right and our budget needs to include new bathroom and kitchen.

Just to clarify further- we do not own the house yet.

I wouldn't risk doing it myself. It's not worth it and the potentially years of worry afterwards as if it has caused any problems like mesothelioma or asbestosis these usually take 10+ years to show themselves. Don't take the risk.

That’s what I thought - my dad thought otherwise because his neighbor removed it themselves Confused

I think we will need to renegotiate price as this work is unavoidable and will cost around £10k to put right

Just because someone else has done it doesn’t make it a good idea. Your lives are worth more than £10K.

Forgive my ignorance, I'm not sure exactly what this type of asbestos is, but if it helps, we had some skimmed over in our old house. It was actually safer than having it taken out, and a lot cheaper.

Yes it’s worth the extra £10k but not sure why we should have to foot the bill for it all, considering it’s exposed and disturbed so needs dealing with. Anyone who wants to buy the house will take issue with it. The house already needs full renovations (literally everything internal needs replacing )

I don’t think the price really reflects that work plus the asbestos - they’re only getting £15-20k less than the doneup market price. So I feel entitled to ask for a discount- maybe meet halfway? the house will need 35k plus spending on it and we won’t get our money back. I think they will be tricky and might want to put back on the market- at which point we’ll need to dismantle the chain as we need to move before March.

Will investigate the skimming option
