Ceiling Mounted extractor hood

Hi, Please can anyone help me re ceiling mounted extractor hoods. I am building an extension and hate the look of all extractors but know I need to have one. I like this one: www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-partners-jlhda918-ceiling-cooker-hood-white/p2915670, They seem to be made for over an island. Is there any reason anyone knows why I can't have this over the hob on a back wall, the wall is external so the ducting can go out there or onto the extension flat room. Thanks for any help and guidance.

From page 10 of the instruction manual....

“If installing this cooker hood between adjoining wall cabinets, the wall
cabinets must not overhang the hob.”

So yes it would appear to be suitable.

We have this one

Which I think is inoffensive and somewhat cheaper than the JL one if that helps (I don't use extractor fans much so didn't want to sell a kidney to buy something I knew I wouldn't use a lot)

No reason why not - assuming you’re not having a any wall cabinets above the cooker?

Bear in mind they are somewhat less effective than a normal level hood as they are further away.

Thanks for your advice I really appreciate it. Will take a look at the amazon version, didireallysaythat I'm like you the extractor will be used about once a year!

If it's going on a wall, why do you say ceiling mounted?

Jackyb777 · 09/11/2018 11:52

Hi,

The Amazon one looks fab.

Piglet John it is going on the ceiling above the hob but can be extracted I guess I mean out the ceiling, sorry I am creating confusion

would you consider a canopy type built into a high wall cabinet that blends into your other wall cabinets?

In this pic it is shown at the same height, but an extractor over a cooker ought to be at a height that you can't bang your face on it when you lean over a pot; and ordinary wall cabinets should be low enough that you can look and reach into them.

various widths and prices

Thanks, we are not having wall cupboards as I like things to look quite minimalist, that's why I want to put the extractor in the ceiling.

got you. Sometimes a built-in canopy fan will fit, but the joists in the ceiling are usually about 400mm centres and about 120mm high so there is room for a duct, but not much for the fans and motor. You may need to have it fixed to the ceiling, but projecting. It will be difficult unless you have access above the ceiling. The manufacturer has the dimensions.

A ceiling extractor needs to be bigger than the hob because the steam and fumes will drift around as they rise.

this is a good brand If interested, ask them to post you their glossy brochure because the website is awful to navigate. John Lewis carry a selection of their products.

You can also get a grill on the ceiling with the motor and fan on the outside of the house wall, sucking through a duct. These are quiet but expensive.

Have a look at the luxair celux slimline 90. Sadly our poxy joists are under 300mm wide so we will have to build a drop.down box to house it in, but it's motor is only 322 wide (I think) and not very high. So it may well fit in your joists.
