How do you paint with Farrow and Ball?

I'm a pretty good home decorator but today I've used Farrow and Ball for the first time as this is what was on the walls previously.

The previous owners used it on their walls so I am touching up an area which has had work done to it.

The bloody paint is sliding off and turning to jelly on the wall. I'm going to have to let it dry and sand it off and start again.

I have NEVER had this happen to me before. What the hell is in this posh paint?

It's awful stuff. We have it over the whole of our extension in both white and some of the darker colours. We painted some of it and a professional decorator did some and he also hated it. Said itbwas really hard to blend the roller and brush marks and needed mire coats. If the white walls get a mark now, you have to paint the whole wall or you get a VERY noticeable shiny patch. Where its on the ceiling, if you roller in a different direction it looks like the ceiling is half painted when the light hits it. It's at the point where I'm going to repaint the hall ceiling in basic white paint as it looks so rubbish. The dark marks like anything and never looks fresh.
When we used high-quality low tack masking tape to put some pictures up, the whole lot of paint (a few coats) just peeled off like no other paint we've ever used.
I've spoken to quite a few people who say the same . One recently whose OH is a decorator and they did their house as they got it cheap but they both hate the finish. I honestly think it's a case of Emperors new clothes with harrow and ball. The colours are lovely but the quality is crap.

Are you sure it was farrow and ball? Could they have colour matched and it’s just Dulux?

NancyJoan · 07/11/2018 18:07

Our decorator prefers it over any other paint, loves the finish and the way it builds up. Different strokes...

LemonRedwood · 07/11/2018 18:07

it’s just Dulux

Sacrilege! Never had a problem with dulux paint.

ChicagoLil · 07/11/2018 18:08

Sadly it is the real gloopy gobshite stuff. I want my Johnstone's back.

Nor me, I love Dulux, but Farrow and Ball is a lot more money.

frazzled1 · 07/11/2018 23:55

Our decorator said F&B for woodwork, colour matched Dulux Trade for walls. Love the F&B colours.

Orchardgreen · 08/11/2018 07:34

I got sucked into the F and B emperors new clothes stuff. They trade on selling a lifestyle with fancy names.
My decorator hates it, it marks easily and you can’t clean it.
Dulux Diamond matt every time now for me.

EdisonLightBulb · 08/11/2018 07:37

My decorator said it's shit. Buy a match pot and have quality trade paint matched to it.

ChicagoLil · 08/11/2018 16:55

Too late. Yesterday I painted with it and today I spent the entire day trying to sandpaper it off the wall. It's like chewing gum. What in the name of Jeff is this stuff?

I needed to do a quick job, I used the paint that the previous owners had left behind and it's glue. Grey glue.

Back to Dulux.

Cheers for your responses.

It’s like when my primary school art teacher used to mix poster paints and pva for waterproof paint. Horrible to use.

Ohyesiam · 08/11/2018 17:08

I have lots of f@b and I’ve never had a problem
With it.

Could it be old paint you are using?

Prestonsflowers · 08/11/2018 17:19

If the paint belonged to the previous owner, is it possible that the tin has been stored in an unheated place and has frozen.
Frozen emulsion definitely goes gloopy

loveka · 08/11/2018 18:34

It sounds like your pot of paint has gone off.

Do you really think they would sell any paint at all if this happened every time?

My whole house is Farrow and Ball. It is the finish I love, and I find it very easy to use.

I have recently used the undercoat. It is amazing and makes it even easier.

VanillaSugary · 08/11/2018 19:19

The paint is about a year old.

Little Greene is supposed to be good, isn't it?

VanillaSugary · 08/11/2018 19:20

Sorry, that was a question. The paint is about a year old?

lazymare · 08/11/2018 19:51

Craig and Rose goes on a million times better and is priced in between Dulux and F&B.

Humptynumpty02 · 08/11/2018 19:55

Who uses masking tape to put pictures up, ffs.

ChicagoLil · 08/11/2018 20:08

Dunno mate - have you run out of No More Nails? 😉

We love it here. F&B seems to give a really lovely finish.

Someone recommended colour matching to Johnstone's paint but that was an absolute waste of money.
