New front door..

We moved recently, from a flat to a house so outside door is something we haven't dealt with previously.. It's a bungalow and has a plastic type storm door and then an inside glazed door.

We need a new outside door (and possibly the steps need replaced too) as it is finicky to close and often opens itself unless locked.

I don't like the plastic look, I'm not overly keen on lots of glass and I want it to be a high safety standard. There are lots of options obviously, would it look strange if we put solid wood storm doors? Is that a practical option or do we need a composite type for weather? - stupid questions I'm sure.

We think we will keep the two door thing, though open to suggestion if it's a bad idea..

I will look for recommendations for a local joiner but wanted some advice so I know what to ask them..

Thanks!

We got a composite and have been 100% pleased with it. Composite is expensive but safe, secure and durable. I'm also not keen on plastic so wanted the timber look. Composite gives you something close to timber, but without the fading and upkeep.

Have a look online at local companies - we found that there are two or three ranges which they all seem to sell. For pricing estimates you could have a look at Adoored, we got ours from there and my husband fitted it himself, but they do offer fitting as well I think.

Oops, looks like Adoored isn't trading any more - sorry!

Thanks @Daisy2990 will check out some composites.

Another one here for composites. Lots of styles, colours and ranges you can choose from.

If you’re worried about security then go for a steel door, again lots of styles, tho maybe a little bit less choice though then composites. But impenetrable.

Oh and plan what locks you want as well at the same time..anti snap, any drill etc. Steel doors have multipoint locking systems, more than usual. (As well as how easy to unlock and get out I.e not having to keep a key near the door in case of fire or emergency).

Thanks @Magik1 hadn't thought about locks and the getting out, that's a great point!

Yes good point! We got a split spindle thinking it'd be secure, it's a complete nightmare! If you pop out e.g. to the car without the front door key, you get locked out.
