Side return house extension

Has anyone attempted having a side return extension made during the winter months I'm debating on wether we should wait till spring or not, pushed for time as new arrival coming just after new years.

Luckily we have a good building company in place already and they've had their architects sort out the planning permission etc, just wondering if it's worth going ahead sooner rather than later, any advice or experience of a winter home extension build would be great.

We had ours built January - March 3 nearly 3 years ago. We stayed living in the house. The boiler was in the loft so we had no issues with hot water or showers. We survived with a 3 year old and newborn. Will you live in the house and have heating and hot water available?

Prices of construction materials are increasing year on year so sooner is always better. We delayed ours by 2 years resulting in a £10k increase - ouch!

Wow a £10k price rise in 2 years is a lot, we have signed up with Builders GB and they will hold the price they quoted till July 2019 will double check. I think we will have to move out if we decide to go ahead sooner rather than later as we're contemplating to having our basement converted by them at the same time, so instead of starting in spring and finishing a few months down the line I'm seriously considering getting them to start asap and move back in by mid summer.

We had one done last year, stayed in the house and it was fine. The only time it became problematic, was when our very old boiler broke down in the middle of the work and we had to wait for a repair. We had not hot water or heating. I would say that if you have confidence in your builders, there shouldn't be a problem.

We are going ahead with the basement conversion and the side return extension just waiting for the builders to finish off a couple of loft conversions that they're working on around the corner from ours.
Luckily we'll be moving out whilst the work is ongoing should make life easier for us and the builders, they'll start by the end of the week and should be all done by summer, the basement conversion is going to take longer as we're having 2 bedrooms and a bathrooom installed under the house.
I'm literally packing our things as I type.

I think there's positive and negatives to both.
We did September to April (big double storey).
We had walls knocked through November last year. It was pretty vile! No heating etc.
But, our whole house and garden was completely finished for May and the lovely summer. We got to use our bifolds and the social space we'd had done and it was wonderful! And still is!

Sounds perfect we've had bio folds put into the design brief also, I want have the same floors that connect the inside and outside spaces together will look super once they're opened up.
A fully open planned ground floor is what the builders & architects have come up with (lots of hidden steel supports above).... should look good once finished, here's a few pictures they sent us of the look we want to achieve.

I'd definitely get it finished for summer for something like that, looks fabulous!

WandsworthMom · 10/11/2018 11:40

Thank you... that's the plan as our newest arrival will be a few months old when it's all finished.

We had our double storey extension built last winter and I chose to move out too. I guess it's a case of if you could you would stay away until it's finished.

Your plans look amazing will they be doing all the fitting out as well?

WandsworthMom · 08/01/2019 11:51

Very true I can't see myself living in the house whilst work is in progress especially with a new baby due very soon.
They will be fitting everything out as well which imo is a plus and saves us looking for people to do the tiling, kitchen installation etc.
It's coming along really well and is all going to plan hopefully will all be finished by early summer.
