4.5k for plastering one room - really?!

Can anyone tell me how much they've paid recently to have a large room plasterboarded and skimmed? Including the ceiling, and taking down the old plasterboard.

Got an outrageous sounding quote (4.5k!) and I'd like to check what the going rate should be. Room is about 5x5m, we are in the Midlands.

Thank you!

Wtf?! £1500 tops for me

They are taking the biscuit and you should get more quotes

Also think if there is any work you can do yourself to save eg removing the boards

Santaisgettingbusy · 05/11/2018 11:33

Skimmed with gold op??

safariboot · 05/11/2018 11:36

I think stuff like that is the "I don't want the job" quote. I had a similar thing for some garden fencing - I reckon that me putting a nail through my shoe while showing him around probably put him off doing the work! (No injury to me luckily)

Thanks all, I'm glad you think it's a crazy price too! Time to find some more plasterers...

I just received my quote this morning. Bungalow - 3 bedrooms, bathroom, large hallway and sitting room. £2665. That’s walls and ceilings.

allmycats · 05/11/2018 12:24

They don't want the job !!!!
Would have thought less than £1500. Had a bedroom done recently. 13 foot x 16 foot - walls skimmed, ceiling plaster-boarded and skimmed- cost £550.00 - all done by 1 man and a lad in a day. The prep. work was mainly done by us. Can you take down the old plasterboard yourselves?

weegiemum · 05/11/2018 12:46

That's about half what we paid for garage conversion, insulation and plaster boarding throughout, steel beam on supporting wall, flooring, 2 windows and surrounding brickwork then internal plastering of ceiling and all walls! £10k.

Your quote is outrageous!

PurpleFlowersInMyHair · 05/11/2018 13:20

Obviously there are clueless people out there (without access to mumsnet!) who would happily pay this. Hence why tradespeople try it on. I imagine they don’t need to work that much at those prices.

GU24Mum · 05/11/2018 13:22

OH's friend (not plasterer but something broadly similar) said that if he was really busy and/or didn't want the job, he'd give a ridiculous quote on the basis it was likely not to be accepted but if anyone did, he'd be happy to do it for the vastly over-inflated price!
