Replacing radiator bleed valve

The head of the screw on the bleed valve has rounded (plumber tightened it too much and we couldn't loosen it) so after a bit of googling I think we can replace the whole thing. Can anyone help with how exactly we do it? How do I remove the old one ? And how do I work out the size needed ?

Please photograph your old one.

How strong are your hands and wrists?

Have you got a socket set?

that one is modern and easy to replace. You can take out the whole plug with a spanner and screw in a new one. The new one may come with PTFE tape already wound round the screw threads (it forms a water seal and also prevents the plug seizing in the radiator). If not buy a roll and wind a bit on. Consider buying a few of the bleeders unless you are sure you will never have another go wrong. The older type with a square socket are harder to remove.

vent plugs

ptfe tape

also invest in several keys (this type)

You must must must must turn off the valves at both ends of the radiator before you start work.

I'm a bit surprised he managed to damage it. Some sort of gorilla?

p.s.

they are all the same size.

Called "half inch" for historical reasons. They aren't.

Thank you so much, by turning off the valves is it as simple as turning both fully to the right (One is just plain, the other a thermostat) ? Best when the system is cold ? Thanks again

screw them both fully down. Count the number of turns so you can put them back to the original setting afterwards.
