Help! Removing cleaning marks from mahogany fireplace

Help! I put a bottle of glass and mirror cleaner on my mahogany fireplace without thinking and it was leaking. It's almost burned away the top layer of wood. Is there any way I can fix it please?

Can you post a photo? It's more likely it has dissolved the finish on the wood, i.e. varnish or polish than the wood itself.

Thanks for replying @wowfudge. I think what I think as wood may actually be veneer. I really hope it can be salvaged.

One of the main ingredients of glass cleaning is alcohol and it will have dissolved the finish. Is it an old or modern mantelpiece?

I didnt realise it was leaking. I think it is old, it has inlaid marquetry around the sides.

In that case, I would contact a French Polisher and get a quote for repairing the finish. If it was reproduction/modern, I'd have a go at repairing it.

How would you repair it? I'm not sure if it might be veneer, there is no wood grain under the part I've rubbed away the mark.

I have a great French polisher locally but I don't think they do mobile, and I can't get it to them.

I really don't think glass cleaner would dissolve wood. Got to be worth asking the French Polisher.

French polishing techniques can mimic wood so it might well be a cheaper wood without a pronounced grain which has been made to look like mahogany.

I think that's likely. I tried to get the worst off (it seems to have almost crystallized) and I can see the grain.
