Recommend me an extractor fan

Shower/utility room fan has packed up - Vent Axia, only three years old so not impressed. Need a replacement to fit the same 15.5 cm x 15.5 cm hole but not sure what I want - room gets quite steamy even with window open so something quite powerful preferred. We dry laundry in there too. @pigletjohn ?

so the duct through the wall is six inches internal diameter? Does it go straight through an external wall or is there a distance?

How is the extractor turned on?

Can you put up a photo of the old one?

PigletJohn · 28/10/2018 18:08

if 150mm is the size of the casing then the duct is much more likely to be about 100mm / 4 inch which is much more common in bathrooms. You'll need to take the fan off and measure it because there is a problem with modern fans being a fraction too big for old ducts. Don't throw away the old one before you have photographed it and measured it very carefully including any bulges on the spigot.

Here it is - was only fitted three years ago as part of house refurb so I think the duct will be new as well.

Goes straight through, turns on with light and continues on timer.

Have a look at the Envirovent SIL100T thats the timer version. Excellent little fan almost silent and one of the best extract rates going. Fitted quite a few had no recalls so far.

They also do a humidistat version which may be of interest to you given it isn't just a shower room.

I'm very fond of the "Soler & Palau" fans which are of good quality. They all seem to have ball-bearing motors, which are durable, and are much quieter than older or cheaper ones.

I think your fan will have a110mm duct through the wall, so you will have to fit a similar size of fan. They are not very powerful unless you buy a ducted inline fan (which is much bigger and I don't see that you have room)

this would fit Compare the electrical usage and db noise numbers with any others you consider.

As it is quite a small fan, turn the Time Delay to maximum, and use it whenever you go in the bathroom. It is so quiet and economical that you could leave it on permanently if you have a damp problem. 8W means it runs for 5 days and nights on about 15p of electricity.

It will work more effectively if the door and window are shut. It will draw in dry air through the gap under the door. Dry air is heavier than water vapour, which will rise towards the ceiling where the fan will remove it.

If you can bear it, you could fit a larger and more powerful fan. An inline fan can go above the ceiling where it will be out of sight. It can be quieter and much more powerful, if you have access, for example in a loft, and can run the duct out through the eaves or gable wall. Or if you can have a larger hole made in the wall, you can have a larger, more powerful conventional fan.

The S&P fans are sometimes sold under other names. I can't recall a source but will re-post if I do.

hi, @ohmno

I just looked at the spec and I think your one is the same as mine.

Does it have a sort of spade-shaped adjuster key clipped to the backplate inside the cover?

I know I've used other brands that are identical. Prices vary a bit.

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 31/10/2018 20:31

Thanks both of you - is a humidistat one that runs all the time? Are they expensive to run?

OP posts:
Ohmno · 31/10/2018 20:45

Very cheap to run think pence per week. A humidistat activates at preset humidity level and won't turn off until the levels drop again.

PigletJohn, I believe they are the same just branded different looking at them.
