Screening view of house

We have a wide but narrow bungalow. Directly opposite we have a 2 story imposing building, we are also on a lower plot making it seem even taller. Our front garden is large and split in half, with driveway and where people walk to the front door, then the other half currently is set to lawn.
I want to plant a few trees so you can see half our home from the road and help shield the building opposite.
My husband is reluctant, he believes people need to see how big our home is for maximum curb appeal....I've always been on the opinion the best houses are those you can't see from the road.
I can't disguise the whole home, but I can change our view and make it appear small until you approach.
What are other people's thoughts?
Show off the full size
Make the property as private as possible

What does 'show off its full size' achieve?

That's a ridiculous snobbish argument

AmIAWeed · 28/10/2018 08:36

Haha GreenTulips that was my first thought but as my Dad agreed with my husband I did wonder if I was missing something!

We used to live in a bungalow which looked tiny from the road because we had a huge wall of hedges for privacy. When friends visited they said it was like a Tardis once they stepped inside. All our neighbours envied the size and aspect of the garden. Who cares what total strangers think!

You’ll need an evergreen for screening. Bamboo is often used for screening as it lets light through. Trees can bring darkness. Remember the 70s/80s when everyone went crazy screening with lelandi which led to lots of neighbour disputes over loss of light? They are beasts which grow v fast so beware.

Purple, we have a hedge, then a row of photinas already.
Ive found an oak tree which is much smaller than others, thinking of a weeping white spruce (for year round foliage) and potentially 2 beech trees. I've already got 5 silver birch - if I can make it look like a little copse with the depths and heights I'd be over the moon - no leylandi in sight!
