Painting this- scandalous?

Sorry the photos are not great- it’s in a room that’s not been used for anything other than storage for three years and there’s lots of stuff in the way so I can’t actually get a full image of it, but basically it’s a big antique mirrored wardrobe made of solid mahogany with lots of carving and inlaid bits, it has two wardrobe sections either side, drawers on the bottom and drawers/cupboards in the middle.

I’m buying my first house and my mum has said I can have my grandad’s old wardrobe. I’m very grateful as it’s a beautiful piece of furniture, and I know my Grandad used to love it, and it will suit the house as it’s a period property, however i’d Really love to paint it. I would do it very sensitively and I’d do a lot of research to make sure I didn’t make a mess of it.. I’ve seen photos of Emma bridgewater’s house in magazines and she has loads of painted antique furniture and it looks beautiful. I’m thinking dove grey chalk Annie Sloan paint but again I’d need to do more research. but anyway my mum thinks this is absolutely scandalous and says I’m not allowed it if I plan to paint it.. but I feel like if I didn’t take it, they would just sell it at an auction as they’ve no use for it and need to get rid of it for space reasons and it wouldn’t be in the family anymore (my grandad was passed it down from his mother!). If I did take it and paint it it would absolutely be a new family heirloom and I’d never get rid of it. My grandad and I were extremely close and I know he’d have been super proud to see that I was buying a house after working so hard to save for deposit etc and I think he’d love to have given me something to go in the new house and in my head he wouldn’t mind what I did with it as long as I loved it and kept it forever!

Just want to know if I’m being unreasonable wanting to paint it.. Thanks!

I've an old heavy oak sideboard, called a buffet, it's an awkward piece of furniture. But I've put a mirror above it and people regularly comment on how fantastic it is.

So relieved to read you're not going to paint it! It would be a travesty and in a few years time, once the fashion for painted furniture has passed, it will be worthless as it would be almost impossible to get back to wood. Much better to make the room work around it as it is.

I think you've made the right decision! I suspect even someone experienced would have trouble getting a decent result on those carved panels.
Also, in a North facing room you may find you need more of a greige than grey as the light does funny things to the colour. Good luck, it should look beautiful!

I'd wait til you've moved. I moved into a house with period features and I was going to change so many of them when I moved in. I decided to live with them all as they were for a while & I've ended up changing nothing. My house is totally different to my friends & I love it for that. You might find once it's in place it just suits the house

I don’t think it is dark at all due to all the mirrored surface. It reflects the light lovely. I’m all for painting old furniture but I don’t think in this example it would be improved. It’s gorgeous as it is.

I'm so glad you are not painting it. Furniture like this is very unfashionable at the moment, but it's time will come again. It would look truly awful painted and would cost and absolute fortune to strip and repolish. The mahogany is beautiful. This type of mahogany is now pretty much extinct, you couldn't buy wood like this new.

It is beatiful. So glad you aren’t going to paint it.

It will be a stunning statement piece.

Yay!!!!

I would first check that you can get it into your bedroom. I live in a Victorian property and upstairs furniture is mostly flatpack.
If you can't, maybe you could have it converted into a living room linen press style cupboard or use it as a hall cupboard.
I would get it valued before changing it.
I certainly wouldn't paint it and I dislike chalk paint.
If you can get it into your bedroom, and you still find it dark, perhaps you could drape it with some pretty fabric, or vintage clothes.
It probably would not get a good price at an auction but wait a few years and it could be worth a lot.

I love painting with AS but this piece is beautiful. I think cheap/cheaper furniture can really be given a new life and an uplift with repainting it. This wardrobe is just too pretty, I wouldn't touch it.
