Problems drilling into stud wall

I've just put two hollow wall plugs into my stud wall. No problems - except I measured wrong! Remeasured and drilled the new holes but the drill won't drill deep into the wall like it did for the previous two holes. The bit only goes in 2cm on all four holes. What could I be hitting?

The house is two tears old. I'll try and add a photo, the ladybird magnet is marking the stud.

The stud?

Would studs be spaced so closely? The ladybird marks one stud. I can't find any evidence of more studs.

Oh sorry missed the bit about the ladybird first time. It could be a nog? (A horizontal timber between the studs). Try drilling a bit higher or lower? It's good to be hitting timber though, you'll get a better fixing - just push harder? Just be sure you're not hitting electrical conduit or a pipe though!

Pipework? Be careful!

DownsNDirty · 23/10/2018 13:47

Oooh never heard of a nog, could be. I need it at that height though. I'll try a long thin wood drill bit and see if it goes in. I don't want to hit cable or pipes though Confused I've heard that detectors are next to useless but I'll dig mine out.

Why can a simple take never be simple Hmm the first two (wrong) anchors went in beautifully!

Just thinking out loud. Would there be a 20mm gap between the plasterboard and the 'block' if it we're wood? FFS I've got to pick the kids up soon. Another abandoned DIY project!

If its 20mm between the back of the plasterboard and the obstruction I'd guess it's a pipe!

Nonsense you've achieved a lovely, pepper-drilled finish to your wall which you can't even cover up now! Grin

I have vast experience at fixing my errors and am now an excellent hole filler Grin
